Add TiKV Incubating status review proposal
Thanks RFC @cncf/toc We will have to find a TOC sponsor to do the due diligence. |
@caniszczyk I would like to help on the due diligence. |
@xiang90 The CNCF Storage WG can also assist you if required. |
@quinton-hoole Thanks. I will do an initial pass by the end of this week. Then I will involve the storage working group for further help/comments. Thanks! |
Thank you @xiang90 and @quinton-hoole! |
Hi @xiang90, please see this Incubating Project Review Proposal document that our team put together, as a foundation to help you with the technical due diligence process. Hope this helps! https://docs.google.com/document/d/188m5gpuhe7XG-v20YmasfoZhc-Dlw3k7WKCy6eN0AqA/edit?usp=sharing |
@ceohockey60 Thanks for putting together the documentation. I left some inline comments in the google doc. |
Hi @xiang90, our team has provided additional responses to your inline comments. Please let me know what else you need and how else we can assist your technical due diligence in general. Thank you. |
@caniszczyk @ceohockey60 @quinton-hoole With the help of Storage WG, I have done the due diligence of TiKV. Overall it is good. See https://docs.google.com/document/d/1isLh8e5D0pAgocbj2ht_ZbZ5MORN3fFD-98tCsVu0rM/edit?usp=sharing for details. |
Thank you all for doing this report.
About the external dependencies: can TiKV be used without TiDB? And does this ever happen in practice?

Yes. Companies like JD.com, Zhihu, Meitu.com are using TiKV at scale without TiDB (which is essentially a sql engine built atop TiKV). A few systems are built on top of TiKV, including three Redis-on-TiKV projects: Tidis, Titan, Titea, and a Prometheus-metrics-in-TiKV project: TiPrometheus. However, the tooling of TiKV is not as great as TiDB. For example, there is no operator built specifically for TiKV, but there is one for TiDB. There is a external binary dependency (PD) which lives outside of TiKV project. I make a few suggestions on the improvement sections around this. |
An inline replied in the DD doc related to your question from @ceohockey60 (a PingCAP employee). |
