Hi TOC, the TiKV team would like to request your review for Incubating status. Happy to present our progress at any of the upcoming TOC meetings, and our team is also happy to assist in any due diligence tasks. Thank you for your consideration.

Thanks RFC @cncf/toc

We will have to find a TOC sponsor to do the due diligence.

With the help of Storage WG, I have done the due diligence of TiKV. Overall it is good. See https://docs.google.com/document/d/1isLh8e5D0pAgocbj2ht_ZbZ5MORN3fFD-98tCsVu0rM/edit?usp=sharing for details.

About the external dependencies: can TiKV be used without TiDB? And does this ever happen in practice?

Yes. Companies like JD.com, Zhihu, Meitu.com are using TiKV at scale without TiDB (which is essentially a sql engine built atop TiKV). A few systems are built on top of TiKV, including three Redis-on-TiKV projects: Tidis, Titan, Titea, and a Prometheus-metrics-in-TiKV project: TiPrometheus.

However, the tooling of TiKV is not as great as TiDB. For example, there is no operator built specifically for TiKV, but there is one for TiDB. There is a external binary dependency (PD) which lives outside of TiKV project. I make a few suggestions on the improvement sections around this.

To address your earlier question:
Notable TiKV-only users with sizable deployments (aka multiple 5 TBs or more) are: JDCloud, Ele.me, Meitu, and ZhuanZhuan.com. We are open to submitting parts of TiDB to the CNCF in the future as well, though at the moment our team thinks it's best to focus on continuing the building of TiKV's foundation, community, and ecosystem first, and tackle many of the improvements that are listed in this doc.
Look forward to presenting at the TOC meeting tomorrow morning.

An inline replied in the DD doc related to your question from @ceohockey60 (a PingCAP employee).
