Try to detect if a student's first name has been abbreviated before
sanitizing it, where "abbreviated" means "it is either a single
character or a single character followed by a period".

If so, default back to using their full name.

How do we want to treat "Bone, T" or "Crew, J."?

for now, as acceptable edge cases. Those would end up as simply "Bone" and "Crew", which is both sufficiently informative and relatively secure.
