Pitch

On December 9th 2011, I started a small website devoted to hosting notes and tests for my fellow McMaster University peers, but it wasn't scalable because it required students to e-mail me files before I could upload them. Nevertheless, it has already accumulated over 300,000 page views. This summer, I decided I would completely re-build that as a collaborative learning platform.

Hi! I am Kemal Ahmed, the CEO of Communote. At communote we are, software engineering and computer science students, building a notes- and tests-sharing website for students by students that will form the perfect educational community. We are currently being advised by our business incubators, Communitech and VentureLab.

From our experiences, we found out the hard way that we have different ways of learning than people who can remember everything they hear in lectures, so we looked for ways to study that work for a large portion of people. One key aspect of learning that we discovered is knowing what to learn. The best method we have found to do this is through collaborative, all-encompassing course summaries.

We're making a website that will implement these ideas by providing wikis for each course, chat services, a secure uploader for notes & tests, and relationships between files of different courses. It'll also be WCAG 2.0-compliant, which means accessible for people with visual impairments.

We're looking for investors to help us take our idea to the next level by allowing us to hire additional developers. They will allow us to bring about our services to different mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android sooner. We'll also be able to provide rewards services for uploaders of popular notes with bitcoins in a way similar to YouTube. Funding would also go towards a second server to host the files and towards hiring experts who will help us design the website for people with visual impairments.

If someone asks what we do

We're building a notes- and tests-sharing website that will reward uploaders by views and allow anyone to read without signing in, similar to YouTube.

Our Company

We're a bunch of students who struggle trying to learn, so we're making a platform for everyone to help each other out. We are strong believers of open-source software and transparency. That's why we've written up a charter to define exactly what we will and won't do (but also so we don't go overboard with features because we are really excited about this).

Our Name

Our name, Communote, comes from the words "community" and "note" because our website is a community where users can come together and do just that-be a place where people can come together and share notes and other educational files.

Unfortunately, the Communote github, Twitter, and other handles have been taken, so we will be "communotey" on these handles.

Features

Coming soon! We don't want to spoil that much, but here is a list of services we might be using..
