Description

In the heading of one of my posts, written in markdown, I have:

math: true
---

I want to write mathematical expressions in this post, but also display dollar signs in free text. For example:

Here is some simple math:
$ \$ 10 - \$ 2 = \$ 8 $
As you can see, when we buy the apple for $2, we are left with $8 remaining in the bank.

And here is some more complicated math:
$ \sum_{n=1}^\infty 1/n^2 = \frac{\pi^2}{6} $

However, when I try to do this, the dollars that are in free text (In the line starting "As you can see, when we buy the apple for $2,...") seem to be read as denoting inline MathJax, and so render the text between them in MathJax.

Obviously, that isn't what I want - do you know how I can fix this?

Operations you have already tried

I tried to use \$ to display the dollar sign in the free text, but this doesn't work - the text between the dollar signs still gets read as MathJax.

Just realised the issue - I needed to write a double backslash in front of the dollar sign to prevent it from being read as MathJax, ie
\\$ and not \$
