There is no good reason to continue to support the Python 2 code. There should be no more commits to it at all (bug fixes, enhancements, new features.) Python 2 itself has not been supported since 1/1/2020.
Instead of removing the Python 2 code, it should remain for reference purposes. However, the README file should be updated to make it clear that the code is no longer supported.
