The goal here is be able to send HTML-formatted emails in WordPress.

Admins should be able to modify the HTML template from the WP dashboard and BuddyPress users should be able to turn off HTML format in their settings panel.

A very good plugin already exists for WordPress - WP Better Emails. My initial idea is to create a companion plugin for WP Better Emails for use with BuddyPress. This will allow BuddyPress users to turn off HTML-formatted emails and use plain-text instead.

Update: A first pass of the WP Better Emails-BuddyPress companion plugin can be found here:

Very good call. You may want to touch base with Paul Gibbs about this. I know he had been working at one point on an API for rich BP emails, based on some of his work in Welcome Pack.

This plugin does a great job of this.. while also being really easy to customize for da n00b

@BoweFrankema Your post about WP Better Emails actually led me to that plugin awhile back! :)

BuddyPress 2.5 included HTML email support and GES 3.7.0 followed suit.

While it would be nice to allow admins to customize the actual HTML template used by BuddyPress, this probably falls out of scope with our current requirements.

Closing for now.
