1. Your code should compile.

The code has been successfully compiled with no error.

2. Implementation.

2.1 The Model

In this project, a dynamic model with optimization of objective function is used. The dynamic model has 6x states as listed below: x: vehicle's position on x direction. y: vehicle's position on y direction. psi: vehicle's heading. v: vehicle's velocity. cte: cross track error. epsi: vehicle's orientation error.

These states are updated via the dynamic model:

psi_[t] = psi[t-1] + v[t-1] / Lf * delta[t-1] * dt
v_[t] = v[t-1] + a[t-1] * dt
cte[t] = f(x[t-1]) - y[t-1] + v[t-1] * sin(epsi[t-1]) * dt
epsi[t] = psi[t] - psides[t-1] + v[t-1] * delta[t-1] / Lf * dt

and implemented in the MPC.cpp as shown below:

The output of the model are 2x variables, the throttle (acceleration) and steering (turning). In the main.cpp:

In the output, the steer value is then going to be divided by deg2rad(25) so that the range is in between [-1, 1].

The goal is to calculate the steer and throttle variable via optimizing the objective function, which is consist of 3x main parts. -- part 1: square sum of error, to be minimized:

The overall objective function is a sum of these three parts. Then to have a good model, I have spent a long time tuning this model, and below are some key changes that I have experienced to get the final result.

So with those parameters tuned, optimizing the objective function provides steering and throttle to control the vehicle.

2.2 Timestep Length and Elapsed Duration (N & dt)

The N and dt values provides the consideration of prediction, which also impacts on the controller output. A too large N value will consider too many points in the future, and especially at sharp turns, this will make the output unstable. For example, during the time I firstly started with 25, it was very hard to make the sharp turn successful. I have tried from 25 down to 5 and finally chose N = 10, since a too small number will not be able to predict the dynamics ahead and also make the system oscillated. For the dt, I have tried from 0.05 to 0.25 where I can think this is within the stable range. I think 0.05 is a little too small to compensate the model, and dt = 0.1 gave a very good response. After dt above 0.25, the time gap is too long to handle the vehicle dynamics, and the system became unstable again. Overall, I used N = 10, dt = 0.1.

2.3 Polynomial Fitting and MPC Preprocessing

The waypoints provided in the simulator are first converted to vehicle coordinates, in main.cpp, shown as below:

Then, a 3-rd order polynimial was used to fit.

and the coefficients are then used to update the errors (cte and epsi) that are going to be used in MPC solver:

2.4 Model Predictive Control with Latency

The 100ms latency was considered by adding the latency part onto states. Multiplying the latency with corresponding velocity provides the latency part, and then they were added to the states, in the main.cpp, as shown below:

Then the states with delay considered are pushed into states to be solved.

3. The vehicle must successfully drive a lap around the track.

The vehicle successfully tracks the road a full lap and did not hit any curb. A recorded video (result_mov) is also included in this repo to check.

Dependencies

Basic Build Instructions

  1. Clone this repo.
  2. Make a build directory: mkdir build && cd build
  3. Compile: cmake .. && make
  4. Run it: ./mpc.

Tips

  1. It's recommended to test the MPC on basic examples to see if your implementation behaves as desired. One possible example is the vehicle starting offset of a straight line (reference). If the MPC implementation is correct, after some number of timesteps (not too many) it should find and track the reference line.
  2. The lake_track_waypoints.csv file has the waypoints of the lake track. You could use this to fit polynomials and points and see of how well your model tracks curve. NOTE: This file might be not completely in sync with the simulator so your solution should NOT depend on it.
  3. For visualization this C++ matplotlib wrapper could be helpful.)
  4. Tips for setting up your environment are available here
  5. VM Latency: Some students have reported differences in behavior using VM's ostensibly a result of latency. Please let us know if issues arise as a result of a VM environment.

Editor Settings

We've purposefully kept editor configuration files out of this repo in order to keep it as simple and environment agnostic as possible. However, we recommend using the following settings:

  • indent using spaces
  • set tab width to 2 spaces (keeps the matrices in source code aligned)

Code Style

Please (do your best to) stick to Google's C++ style guide.

Call for IDE Profiles Pull Requests

Help your fellow students!

We decided to create Makefiles with cmake to keep this project as platform agnostic as possible. Similarly, we omitted IDE profiles in order to we ensure that students don't feel pressured to use one IDE or another.

However! I'd love to help people get up and running with their IDEs of choice. If you've created a profile for an IDE that you think other students would appreciate, we'd love to have you add the requisite profile files and instructions to ide_profiles/. For example if you wanted to add a VS Code profile, you'd add:

  • /ide_profiles/vscode/.vscode
  • /ide_profiles/vscode/README.md

The README should explain what the profile does, how to take advantage of it, and how to install it.

Frankly, I've never been involved in a project with multiple IDE profiles before. I believe the best way to handle this would be to keep them out of the repo root to avoid clutter. My expectation is that most profiles will include instructions to copy files to a new location to get picked up by the IDE, but that's just a guess.

One last note here: regardless of the IDE used, every submitted project must still be compilable with cmake and make./
