This sounds like a graphics driver issue. Could you try updating your nouveau driver, or switch to the proprietary nvidia driver instead?

I've previously tried the proprietary driver, but it is not ready for Ubuntu 17.10. It caused an FS-destroying crash.

I'm currently running xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.15-2, which is the latest available in the 'artful' package repos.
