About Me

Hi I’m Ryan, a software engineer, designer and photographer. I have a long history with being involved with coding, starting when I was about 11 yrs old. A friend introduced me to QBasic and the help docs so with nothing but time on my hands I started making my own games and apps. From there I moved on to Visual Basic 3.0 and was able to make a couple of apps for family members. There’s a few apps I have vivid memories of making and for a while my source code lived on the internet as I was as active as a 12yr old can be on the old VBcode forums.

Over the past few years I kept dipping my toes back into coding as something to do for fun and after I realized that a lot of walkthrough videos focus mainly on executing their vision of whatever the app is without teaching you the ‘why’, I decided to quit my job and enroll (plus graduate!) from a coding bootcamp - Flatiron School - to learn the how and the why.

I love working with React, Javascript, Ruby, and Ruby on Rails. I'm passionate about photography and design and truly believe that learning never stops.

Deployed Projects

  • Text-Ray - A Javascript Spelling Bee game using a Rails API backend
  • GTA Micro-manager - A small timer app to keep track of when to sell 'product' in GTA V: Online
  • Awesome-Reads - A Ruby on Rails CRUD app that lets you write reviews on books

  1. [RUBY / RAILS] This is the backend for my vinyl collection site. Process Oauth1.0 req and all Discogs API requests. Model structure is certainly large for a small project. Music is complex.

  2. [REACT.JS] Front-end for my vinyl collection site. I used Semantic UI as it feels quick and light weight with a lot of useful basic components. Needs work on mobile devices.

  3. [JAVASCRIPT / CSS] The core of this game is based on NY Times Spelling Bee game. Uses API to check validity of word on game creation.

  4. [JAVASCRIPT] A tool to micro manage your time in Grand Theft Auto V Online. Roughly keeps track of when you're producing product. It's not perfect but gives you a good idea.

  5. [RUBY] A Command Line real time play by play scoreboard for NBA games. Initially built right before the NBA season stopped. I think the API endpoints have changed so it may not work post bubble life.

  6. [RUBY / RAILS] This is a simple CRUD app that lets users review a book, view books by author, reviews by user, search for books, and leave a rating. Bootstrap was used as well.
