Looks like arm64 OSX is the most affected, for example:https://dev.azure.com/dnceng/public/_build/results?buildId=1237122&view=ms.vss-test-web.build-test-results-tab&runId=36812660&paneView=dotnet-dnceng.dnceng-build-release-tasks.helix-test-information-tab&resultId=110689 all OSX arm64 test runs stopped without any reason in the log:

At a glance no. If they were then you would see this GitHub issue associated with the build in runfo. At the moment there are no associated issues.

Dug in a bit and it's hitting the Python PIP error I saw in some other logs. Filed the following to track in core-eng

Thanks @jaredpar, I see that dotnet/core-eng#13736 covers failures like "The tests all completed successfully but ended up failing with the following root error:" but it does not cover OSX arm64 hangs where we have the test starting and then there is nothing in the log https://helixre8s23ayyeko0k025g8.blob.core.windows.net/dotnet-runtime-refs-heads-main-050e73acf1cf4c5b91/JIT.CodeGenBringUpTests/console.ae514c4e.log?sv=2019-07-07&se=2021-08-03T16%3A52%3A11Z&sr=c&sp=rl&sig=ZfN3aMhfYLiFMMdWWmscAGvcn3aPJXnHHtkVWyCmHqk%3D.

Do we need a separate issue for it?

@sandreenko yes seems like we should have a separate issue for that. Can you point me to some builds which hit that failure? I want to look at some of the other log files.

@sandreenko this is not a regular hang, those get killed by helix and it adds a timeout disclaimer. This looks like an agent disconnect. I had reported somethin like this to @Chrisboh earlier this week. See for example:

It also seems suspicious because it creates an error log for every test but they are not downloadable on the helix API last I checked.

This build has many cases. It is a scheduled main testing.

It looks like the job exited but left a lot of child processes around that were then killed but later there were issues uploading the core files (believe that is what the log says). @MattGal or @ChadNedzlek would need to confirm.

I looked at this. There are two annoying things going on,

  • The work item didn't actually leak processes, the machine started two Helix clients and they killed each other. We only recently added killing of them (basically now, before and after work's done, we walk the machine's processes and kill any that contain the work items' specific environment variables, because they can't always be trusted to die on their own. This is tracked by https://github.com/dotnet/core-eng/issues/13596 but thus far noone has figured out how the second client gets started. There are many theories related to manual machine maintenance but no smoking gun yet. I took all the machines hitting this offline, it should stop now, but noone has root-caused it so we don't know when it will impact other macs.

To see this more clearly, try this Kusto query:

WorkItems
| where Started >= datetime(2021-07-14 05:50:11.5190000) and Started <= datetime(2021-07-14 05:59:31.3480000)

... and look closely at the overlap in start times for work items

  • The problem with the dumps is not that your tests crashed (indeed, by virtue of being kill()'ed they didn't likely crash). This particular machine (dci-macm1-build-003) wasn't doing this before and, interestingly, was interacted-with by the DDFUN team yesterday and started doing the double-client thing then. This problem is simply that the helix runner user lacks permissions to the /cores folder, which means crash dumps go in but never get cleaned up. I'll check that @parose1 fixed this last night like he mentioned, though it matters little as this machine is no offline as an investigation machine for the double-client issue above.

Mitigated with 3827b7f (based on the data that runfo shows). Keeping open until the change gets into the 6.0 branches (via an Arcade update).

Closing as the fix is now part of every branch that showed the symptom (main, release/6.0*).
