Not currently, but I would happily accept contributions of guides for the wiki. If you have any specific questions, maybe we can help you. |

Generally, you would need an interface card with MPU-401 support or be running the SoftMPU TSR. Some DOS era sound cards support MPU-401, some do not even if they have MIDI ports. Then you will need some cable to connect between the interface card and the Pi. The easiest is to purchase a MIDI-in/out pigtail cable (plugs into the joystick port on one end then breaks out into 2 MIDI DIN connectors, optionally a joystick connector as well) and attach a HAT to your Pi that has a MIDI-in DIN connector. You can also direct wire to the Pi's GPIO but that would require modifying or fabricating a custom cable. Provided your interface card is configured and working (General MIDI usually ouputs at address 330 in DOS) that should be all you need. Most external MIDI synths were driverless. Bear in mind you'll have to connect the mt32-pi to speakers, either combine the inputs with a reversed splitter or have speakers that support 2 inputs simultaneously. The setup works flawlessly on my Ultimate 486 build. I'm using a modified (to fix manufacturer bugs) Yamaha YMF-719 ISA sound card that supports MPU-401 and a Pi 3A+ with an mt32-pi-midi-hat I built. The cable I'm using is a generic MIDI in/out cable with a joystick connector in-line. For Windows 98 you need to be careful that your sound card supports any kind of MIDI, a lot of cards post-2000 had none. Also if playing MIDI in Win98 it defaults to the crappy software synth that came with the OS, so you'll need to change that in Control Panel. In fact if you're using DOSBox or ScummVM you can use this setup with a USB to MIDI cable, works just great for testing my soldering work after building HATs to sell. (Though if you're doing that full time, just use MUNT and/or FluidSynth on your computer.) |
