I'm not a huge fan of the ephemeral nature of Gitter.
Its easy to lose a thread of conversation about a specific topic I much prefer to use issues where the thread of discussion is clear.
But... I do like:

  • the ability to @/all when asking a question to the group.
  • better notification system than GitHub for mentions, new issues/PRs
  • less intimidating for new people who might not want to create an "issue" and just want to chat...?

@markwilliamfirth we can close this issue when we phase out our use of Gitter.
Tudo, methodical use of Workflow Labels and DWYLBot will make "chatting" about project work a thing of the past. we need to have a culture of capturing everything in either issues or code so there is full traceability. right now way too much is said/discussed in "chat".
Not saying we won't have a "chat room" for general non-project related stuff, just that we cannot close the Gitter issue till we have precisely described the appropriate use for it.
Perhaps it's worth moving this issue to HQ...? thoughts?

I think this is bigger than time.

Agreed we should move this to HQ.
