best-time-to-plant-a-tree

Write a list of the types of trees we want/need to grow so we can start doing research/experimentation into their ideal growing conditions (water, light, soil acidity, etc), companion plants (to reduce pests) and expected time to maturity.

Alphabetical List

  • Almond
  • Apple (Fuji)
  • Apple (Royal Gala) 🍎
  • Apricot
  • Avocado (Haas) 🥑 see: 🥑 Avocado 🌱 Economics 📈 Research 🔍 #99
  • Bananas (not strictly a "tree" but you get the idea ... do we need to grow them in green houses? what is the ideal temperature/humidity? which variety should we select...? #HelpWanted) Plant: Banana: dwarf cavendish sunroom#3
  • Blueberries 🫐
  • Cashew 💰
  • Cherry 🍒
  • Chestnut 🌰
  • Clementines 🍊
  • Coconut (is it possible to grow coconut palms away from tropical regions...?) 🥥
  • Custard Apple (nothing like an "apple" but still tasty!)
  • Dragon Fruit 🐉
  • Figs
  • Grapes (what kinds...?) 🍇
  • Grapefruit
  • Guava
  • Kiwi (technically a vine, but then so are grapes!_) 🥝
  • Lemons 🍋
  • Limes (research required)
  • Longan
  • Lychee
  • Mango (what kind can we grow in our chosen region?)
  • Money 💰 🎄 😜 |> Moringa Moringa Oleifera #101
  • Nectarines 🍑
  • Oranges 🍊
  • Passionfruit
  • Peach 🍑
  • Pear (which do you prefer? I like "soft and juicy" as opposed to "hard and dry"...) 🍐
  • Pecan (nut) 🌰
  • Persimmon 🟠
  • Pine 🌲
  • Plums
  • Pomegranate
  • Star Fruit ⭐
  • Walnut

How You Can Help

  1. Please edit and expand on this list!
  2. If you have time and are passionate about a particular type of tree, start investigating it by creating a sub-issue and link it back to this list!

"In the UK, avocados had the third largest sales growth of any grocery item last year, just behind a brand of beer and an energy drink."

"Head to the East Asia and they’re taking over the world’s fastest-growing economy, too: China imported 32,100 tonnes of avocados last year, which was more than 1,000 times the number in 2011."

"And avocados are thirsty plants: by most estimates, avocado farming requires at least two or three times more water than potato farming."

not that comparison to potatoes is good/fair ...

But it's worth baring in mind that Avocados require a lot of water. #21

Solving the climate change crisis really could be as simple as planting a tree… well, 1.6 billion hectares of trees, to be more accurate, which could soak up more than 200 gigatons of carbon over the 40-year average lifespan of a tree.

We’ve just been given this big lime tree!
David will need to take the Jeep up in a week or so so I’ll ask him to take it for us.
It apparently needs to be planted out in the next 2 weeks.

The world needs to plant 0.9 billion hectares (2.2 billion acres) of new trees to capture two thirds of human-made carbon emissions.

We planted out the Lime tree from above in a dedicated "box" in our front-garden:

It has several blossoms that should fruit this year. 🍋 (no lime emoji ...)

We also planted out one of the Avocado #99 trees that @carolrmc grew from seed 🌱 on her veranda:

Watering them with a watering can is tedious. see: dwyl/home#24
