The Task.Status returned by the Task.getStatus() method is overridden and used by persistent tasks to keep their internal state (usually composed of one or more counters for task's progression and a task's specific state). This usage differs from the original purpose of Task.getStatus() which is to provide a quick update of the status of potentially very volatile tasks. The persistent task internal state is also shown in the Task API but I think it should only report progression/stats about the tasks here, while the Cluster State API shows the internal state of persistent tasks as it does today.

We could decorelate AllocatedPersistentTask.getStatus() from Task.Status by introducing a new PersistentTask.State interface and rename AllocatedPersistentTask.getStatus() to something like lastCommitedState().

The method is meant imo to expose stats (typically progress). This is still relevant? If people implement this by directly exposing state or creating a dedicated problem isn't something that should concern the framework, in my opinion. Can you explain more as to why do you see this is as different?

I completly agree.

This is still relevant? If people implement this by directly exposing state or creating a dedicated problem isn't something that should concern the framework, in my opinion. Can you explain more as to why do you see this is as different?

Some persistent tasks expose a getStats() method in addition to the getStatus() and use getStatus() for persisting a state. My point is that the framework could make this less confusing by letting the persistent tasks expose whatever they want through getStatus() and the Task API (typically stats/progress) while the persistent task state to persist is retrieved through a getState() method.

I see. One more thing I learned today. In that case, should we also rename getStatus() to getStats()? so TM Tasks will report stats and persistent tasks can have a state?

My point is that the framework could make this less confusing by letting the persistent tasks expose whatever they want through getStatus() and the Task API (typically stats/progress) while the persistent task state to persist is retrieved through a getState() method.

++ The getStatus()/getState() situation is confusing to someone implementing a persistent task.

Comments on Task#getStatus() seem to suggest they should be used for volatile stats. But then AllocatedPersistentTask#getStatus() overrides this with what looks like state wrapped with a status object, then introduces a new getState() which exposes the state directly and appears to be important to the persistent task framework.

As an implementor of AllocatedPersistentTask it's not clear which -- or if -- you should override? If you override them with your own custom stats/state does that break the allocated task? Are these ever actually persisted somewhere or just for display?

It's also made more confusing since these only apply to the allocated task (I think?), and if the implementor wants to persist some task-specific state that survives task failures, they need to to call persistentTasksService.updateStatus().

Yes - so the idea is not to have getState() but you should indeed periodically call persistentTasksService.updateState (via AllocatedPersistedTask.updatePersistentState) (all using new proposed naming).

Double checking: so node tasks will share information via getStats() and if a persistent task needs to store state it should invoke AllocatedPersistedTask.updatePersistentState() (name pending)?

This sounds good to me.

With multiple data paths, we write the state files for index metadata to all data paths. We only properly fsync on the first location, though. For other locations, we possibly expose the file before its contents is properly fsynced. This commit reworks the Sniffer component to simplify it and make it possible to test it.

In particular, it no longer takes out the host that failed when sniffing on failure, but rather relies on whatever the cluster returns. This is the result of some valid comments from #27985. Taking out one single host is too naive, hard to test and debug.

A new Scheduler abstraction is introduced to abstract the tasks scheduling away and make it possible to plug in any test implementation and take out timing aspects when testing.

Concurrency aspects have also been improved, synchronized methods are no longer required. At the same time, we were able to take #27697 and #25701 into account and fix them, especially now that we can more easily add tests.

Last but not least, unit tests are added for the Sniffer component, long overdue.

The purposefully wrong key is also used in

This is related to #30141. Right now in the transport client we open a
temporary node connection and take the node information. This node
information is used to open a permanent connection that is used for the
client. However, we continue to use the configured transport address.
If the configured transport address is a load balancer, you might
connect to a different node for the permanent connection. This causes
the handshake validation to fail. This commit removes the handshake
validation for the transport client when it simple node sample mode.

This pull request removes the relationship between the state 
of persistent task (as stored in the cluster state) and the status 
of the task (as reported by the Task APIs and used in various 
places) that have been confusing for some time (#29608).

In order to do that, a new PersistentTaskState interface is added. 
This interface represents the persisted state of a persistent task. 
The methods used to update the state of persistent tasks are 
renamed: updatePersistentStatus() becomes updatePersistentTaskState() 
and now takes a PersistentTaskState as a parameter. The 
Task.Status type as been changed to PersistentTaskState in all 
places were it make sense (in persistent task customs in cluster 
state and all other methods that deal with the state of an allocated 
persistent task).
