Index isn't a good key, and can lead to subtle bugs. Is there a natural key we could use here? If not, it may be best to not use a key at all.

There is no natural id (at least at the moment). But in the next step we will generate expressions for the suggestions, and then we can use the expression as an id (which is also nice because it prevents unnecessary re-renders if a suggestion just switches places with another one). I would take care of that in a separate PR.

This confused me at first. I think we should come up with a different name, because "role" is generally used in the context of security. It's not wrong, just misleading to me.
Also, I don't really understand how this is intended to work. It seems like roles would need to be associated with table columns in some way, and with this implementation, they are disconnected.

As discussed offline, roles are not optimal for transferring meta information from one visualization to the next one.
I would remove them for now and once we actually hit this problem, we can think of a more suitable solution. ping @wylieconlon

This says that it's fetching suggestions on first render, without user interaction. Why would we want that?

This test loads the editor with an initial datasource and an initial visualization. This means the datasource will be able to provide suggestions for datatables and all visualizations can particiapte in creating suggestions. This is done to fill the bottom right suggestions:

You're reusing suggestion IDs here, I would expect a uniqueness error.

This is the implementation of getSuggestions of the visualization, not the datasource. These ids are referencing the datatable used for this visualization suggestion. A single visualization can provide multiple suggestions based on a single datatable, this is not an error. Because this concept is pretty misleading, I changed the naming (see your other comment down below)

Why does this need an act() call? I thought enzyme was smart enough to know how to trigger these changes with simulate

It should, but it currently doesn't - this is probably fixed when we upgrade enzyme and enzyme react adapter (should also get rid of the "you did something outside of act" error which get logged to console while running the tests currently)

I would expect a suggestion click to happen inside a modal, is that what this is doing? If not in a modal, what's this?

This is the bottom right suggestions which are always displayed.
The modal makes sense when the user drops a field in the workspace. I didn't add the modal yet, atm it is always picking the first suggestion (see https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/36513/files#diff-3bc17690d1f0177c324498f168ff529dR63 )

Using key order might work, but I've been wondering about this in the registry- shouldn't we used something like an indexed map?

This is just to pick something on first render - we should change how that works before first MVP (maybe a configuration setting with a meaningful default value or a "priority" prop on the datasources and visualizations?). Same thing for the dropdowns to switch between datasources and visualizations - just there to be able to test for now.
Not sure what an indexed map would help us with this - it's still kind of random which one gets picked because we won't control the loading order of plugins and picking the first one in an alphabetically sorted list also isn't really helpful.

numbers are also valid keys in an object, but I get your point ;) . I changed it to number because this magic "id" is just the index in the array of data table suggestions which the datasource provided. I updated the names and made this an array because it's essentially that - plus suggestionId is really misleading here because it's not clear whether we are talking about a datatable suggestion or a visualization suggestion. Please check out my latest commit. If something is still unclear, I'm happy to change it, this could be more intuitive for sure.
The flow is basically like this (this code is located in suggestion_helpers):

The datasourceSuggestionId comes into play to express which of the multiple suggested data tables the visualization wants to use for any given suggestion. It is just the index of the suggestedDataTables array, not something created by the datasource itself or anything. It makes total sense to refer to the same suggested data table in multiple suggestions. Because of this I renamed the datasourceSuggestionId to tableIndex (https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/36513/files#diff-c9e959476594f76ae1ce129e8beb7e50R133) and renamed the confusing tableColumns in a suggestion request to tables (https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/36513/files#diff-c9e959476594f76ae1ce129e8beb7e50R125)

UI is very rudimentary at the moment, drag and drop can't directly be tested because the data source isn't ready yet, so it's just verifiable on a unit test level.
