…mits For endless, the commit subject will be 'UBUNTU: release x.y.z' instead of 'UBUNTU: Ubuntu-x.y.z'. Detect that option to get the changelog handling to work again. [endlessm/eos-shell#2840]

startnewrelease doesn't work with our local endless package revision suffix, so add a separate rule "startnewendless" that just bumps the local revision up. [endlessm/eos-shell#2840]
We handle linux a little differently than our other packages, so add a little documentation describing the packaging flow. [endlessm/eos-shell#2840]

The way namespace tags are implemented in sysfs is more complicated than necessary. As each tag is a pointer value and required to be non-NULL under a namespace enabled parent, there's no need to record separately what type each tag is. If multiple namespace types are needed, which currently aren't, we can simply compare the tag to a set of allowed tags in the superblock assuming that the tags, being pointers, won't have the same value across multiple types. This patch rips out kobj_ns_type handling from sysfs. sysfs now has an enable switch to turn on namespace under a node. If enabled, all children are required to have non-NULL namespace tags and filtered against the super_block's tag. kobject namespace determination is now performed in lib/kobject.c::create_dir() making sysfs_read_ns_type() unnecessary. The sanity checks are also moved. create_dir() is restructured to ease such addition. This removes most kobject namespace knowledge from sysfs proper which will enable proper separation and layering of sysfs. This is the second try. The first one was cb26a31 ("sysfs: drop kobj_ns_type handling") which tried to automatically enable namespace if there are children with non-NULL namespace tags; however, it was broken for symlinks as they should inherit the target's tag iff namespace is enabled in the parent. This led to namespace filtering enabled incorrectly for wireless net class devices through phy80211 symlinks and thus network configuration failure. a1212d2 ("Revert "sysfs: drop kobj_ns_type handling"") reverted the commit. This shouldn't introduce any behavior changes, for real. v2: Dummy implementation of sysfs_enable_ns() for !CONFIG_SYSFS was missing and caused build failure. Reported by kbuild test robot. Introduce kernfs interface to manipulate a directory which takes and returns sysfs_dirents. create_dir() is renamed to kernfs_create_dir_ns() and its argumantes and return value are updated. create_dir() usages are replaced with kernfs_create_dir_ns() and sysfs_create_subdir() usages are replaced with kernfs_create_dir(). Dup warnings are handled explicitly by sysfs users of the kernfs interface. sysfs_enable_ns() is renamed to kernfs_enable_ns(). This patch doesn't introduce any behavior changes. v2: Dummy implementation for !CONFIG_SYSFS updated to return -ENOSYS. v3: kernfs_enable_ns() added. v4: Refreshed on top of "sysfs: drop kobj_ns_type handling, take #2" so that this patch removes sysfs_enable_ns(). The reason that call_rcu() needs to invoke the scheduler is to wake up the corresponding rcuo callback-offload kthread, which does the job of starting up a grace period and invoking the callbacks afterwards. One solution (championed on a related problem by Lai Jiangshan) is to simply defer the wakeup to some point where scheduler locks are no longer held. Since we don't want to unnecessarily incur the cost of such deferral, the task before us is threefold: 1. Determine when it is likely that a relevant scheduler lock is held. 2. Defer the wakeup in such cases. 3. Ensure that all deferred wakeups eventually happen, preferably sooner rather than later. We use irqs_disabled_flags() as a proxy for relevant scheduler locks being held. This works because the relevant locks are always acquired with interrupts disabled. We may defer more often than needed, but that is at least safe. The wakeup deferral is tracked via a new field in the per-CPU and per-RCU-flavor rcu_data structure, namely ->nocb_defer_wakeup. This flag is checked by the RCU core processing. The __rcu_pending() function now checks this flag, which causes rcu_check_callbacks() to initiate RCU core processing at each scheduling-clock interrupt where this flag is set. Of course this is not sufficient because scheduling-clock interrupts are often turned off (the things we used to be able to count on!). So the flags are also checked on entry to any state that RCU considers to be idle, which includes both NO_HZ_IDLE idle state and NO_HZ_FULL user-mode-execution state. This approach should allow call_rcu() to be invoked regardless of what locks you might be holding, the key word being "should". Reported-by: Dave Jones <davej@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Paul E. ttyA has ld associated to n_gsm, when ttyA is closing, it triggers to release gsmttyB's ld data dlci[B], then race would happen if gsmttyB is opening in parallel. (Note: This patch set differs from previous set in that it uses mutex instead of spin lock to avoid race, so that it avoids sleeping in automic context) Here are race cases we found recently in test: CASE #1 ==================================================================== releasing dlci[B] race with gsmtty_install(gsmttyB), then panic in gsmtty_open(gsmttyB), as below: tty_release(ttyA) tty_open(gsmttyB) | | ----- gsmtty_install(gsmttyB) | | ----- gsm_dlci_alloc(gsmttyB) => alloc dlci[B] tty_ldisc_release(ttyA) ----- | | gsm_dlci_release(dlci[B]) ----- | | gsm_dlci_free(dlci[B]) ----- | | ----- gsmtty_open(gsmttyB) gsmtty_open() { struct gsm_dlci *dlci = tty->driver_data; => here it uses dlci[B] ... } In gsmtty_open(gsmttyA), it uses dlci[B] which was release, so hit a panic. ===================================================================== CASE #2 ===================================================================== releasing dlci[0] race with gsmtty_install(gsmttyB), then panic in gsmtty_open(), as below: tty_release(ttyA) tty_open(gsmttyB) | | ----- gsmtty_install(gsmttyB) | | ----- gsm_dlci_alloc(gsmttyB) => alloc dlci[B] | | ----- gsmtty_open(gsmttyB) fail | | ----- tty_release(gsmttyB) | | ----- gsmtty_close(gsmttyB) | | ----- gsmtty_detach_dlci(dlci[B]) | | ----- dlci_put(dlci[B]) | | tty_ldisc_release(ttyA) ----- | | gsm_dlci_release(dlci[0]) ----- | | gsm_dlci_free(dlci[0]) ----- | | ----- dlci_put(dlci[0]) In gsmtty_detach_dlci(dlci[B]), it tries to use dlci[0] which was released, then hit panic. ===================================================================== IMHO, n_gsm tty operations would refer released ldisc, as long as gsm_dlci_release() has chance to release ldisc data when some gsmtty operations are ongoing.. This patch is try to avoid it by: 1) in n_gsm driver, use a global gsm mutex lock to avoid gsm_dlci_release() run in parallel with gsmtty_install(); 2) Increase dlci's ref count in gsmtty_install() instead of in gsmtty_open(), the purpose is to prevent gsm_dlci_release() releasing dlci after gsmtty_install() allocats dlci but before gsmtty_open increases dlci's ref count; 3) Decrease dlci's ref count in gsmtty_remove(), a tty framework API, this is the opposite process of step 2). Commit 4d9b109(tty: Prevent deadlock in n_gsm driver) tried to close all the virtual ports synchronously before closing the phycial ports, so the tty_vhangup() is used. But the tty_unlock/lock() is wrong: tty_release tty_ldisc_release tty_lock_pair(tty, o_tty) < == Here the tty is for physical port tty_ldisc_kill gsmld_close gsm_cleanup_mux gsm_dlci_release tty = tty_port_tty_get(&dlci->port) < == Here the tty(s) are for virtual port They are different ttys, so before tty_vhangup(virtual tty), do not need to call the tty_unlock(virtual tty) at all which causes unbalanced unlock warning. As part of normal operaions, the hrtimer subsystem frequently calls into the timekeeping code, creating a locking order of hrtimer locks -> timekeeping locks clock_was_set_delayed() was suppoed to allow us to avoid deadlocks between the timekeeping the hrtimer subsystem, so that we could notify the hrtimer subsytem the time had changed while holding the timekeeping locks. This was done by scheduling delayed work that would run later once we were out of the timekeeing code. But unfortunately the lock chains are complex enoguh that in scheduling delayed work, we end up eventually trying to grab an hrtimer lock. This works for the case here, where the do_adjtimex() was the deadlock trigger point. Unfortuantely, in update_wall_time() we still hold the jiffies lock, which would deadlock with the ipi triggered by clock_was_set(), preventing us from calling it even after we drop the timekeeping lock. So instead call clock_was_set_delayed() at that point. …ake #2] setlocalversion script was testing the presence of .git directory in order to find out if git is used as SCM to track the current kernel project. However in some cases, .git is not a directory but can be a file: when the kernel is a git submodule part of a git super project for example. This patch just fixes this by using 'git rev-parse --show-cdup' to check that the current directory is the kernel git topdir. This has the advantage to not test and rely on git internal infrastructure directly. Signed-off-by: Franck Bui-Huu <fbuihuu@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Michal Marek <mmarek@suse.cz>

Jon Maloy says: ==================== tipc: link setup and failover improvements This series consists of four unrelated commits with different purposes. - Commit #1 is purely cosmetic and pedagogic, hopefully making the failover/tunneling logics slightly easier to understand. - Commit #2 fixes a bug that has always been in the code, but was not discovered until very recently. - Commit #3 fixes a non-fatal race issue in the neighbour discovery code. - Commit #4 removes an unnecessary indirection step during link startup. ==================== Signed-off-by: David S. Sometimes we may meet the following lockdep issue. The root cause is .set_clock callback is executed with spin_lock_irqsave in sdhci_do_set_ios. However, the IMX set_clock callback will try to access clk_get_rate which is using a mutex lock. The fix avoids access mutex in .set_clock callback by initializing the pltfm_host->clock at probe time and use it later instead of calling clk_get_rate again in atomic context. Avoid circular mutex lock by pushing the dev->lock to the .fini callback on each extension. As em28xx-dvb, em28xx-alsa and em28xx-rc have their own data structures, and don't touch at the common structure during .fini, only em28xx-v4l needs to be locked. Paul Durrant says: ==================== make skb_checksum_setup generally available Both xen-netfront and xen-netback need to be able to set up the partial checksum offset of an skb and may also need to recalculate the pseudo- header checksum in the process. This functionality is currently private and duplicated between the two drivers. Patch #1 of this series moves the implementation into the core network code as there is nothing xen-specific about it and it is potentially useful to any network driver. Patch #2 removes the private implementation from netback. Patch #3 removes the private implementation from netfront. v2: - Put skb_checksum_setup in skbuff.c rather than dev.c - remove inline ==================== Signed-off-by: David S. When the PR host is running on a POWER8 machine in POWER8 mode, it will use doorbell interrupts for IPIs. If one of them arrives while we are in the guest, we pop out of the guest with trap number 0xA00, which isn't handled by kvmppc_handle_exit_pr, leading to the following BUG_ON: [ 331.436215] exit_nr=0xa00 | pc=0x1d2c | msr=0x800000000000d032 [ 331.437522] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ 331.438296] kernel BUG at arch/powerpc/kvm/book3s_pr.c:982! We also need to jump to the doorbell interrupt handler in book3s_segment.S to handle the interrupt on the way out of the guest. Through a twisty and circuituous path it is possible to currently trick the code into creating a default context and forgetting to pin it immediately into the GGTT. (This requires a system using contexts without an aliasing ppgtt, which is currently restricted to Baytrails machines manually specifying a module parameter to force enable contexts, or on Sandybridge and later that manually disable the aliasing ppgtt.) The consequence is that during module unload we attempt to unpin the default context twice and encounter a BUG remonstrating that we attempt to unpin an unbound object. In our ongoing effort to simplify the TIPC locking structure, we see a need to remove the linked list for tipc_links in the bearer. This can be explained as follows. Currently, we have three different ways to access a link, via three different lists/tables: 1: Via a node hash table: Used by the time-critical outgoing/incoming data paths. (e.g. link_send_sections_fast() and tipc_recv_msg() ): grab net_lock(read) find node from node hash table grab node_lock select link grab bearer_lock send_msg() release bearer_lock release node lock release net_lock 2: Via a global linked list for nodes: Used by configuration commands (link_cmd_set_value()) grab net_lock(read) find node and link from global node list (using link name) grab node_lock update link release node lock release net_lock (Same locking order as above. No problem.) 3: Via the bearer's linked link list: Used by notifications from interface (e.g. tipc_disable_bearer() ) grab net_lock(write) grab bearer_lock get link ptr from bearer's link list get node from link grab node_lock delete link release node lock release bearer_lock release net_lock (Different order from above, but works because we grab the outer net_lock in write mode first, excluding all other access.) The first major goal in our simplification effort is to get rid of the "big" net_lock, replacing it with rcu-locks when accessing the node list and node hash array. This will come in a later patch series. But to get there we first need to rewrite access methods ##2 and 3, since removal of net_lock would introduce three major problems: a) In access method #2, we access the link before taking the protecting node_lock. This will not work once net_lock is gone, so we will have to change the access order. We will deal with this in a later commit in this series, "tipc: add node lock protection to link found by link_find_link()". b) When the outer protection from net_lock is gone, taking bearer_lock and node_lock in opposite order of method 1) and 2) will become an obvious deadlock hazard. This is fixed in the commit ("tipc: remove bearer_lock from tipc_bearer struct") later in this series. c) Similar to what is described in problem a), access method #3 starts with using a link pointer that is unprotected by node_lock, in order to via that pointer find the correct node struct and lock it. Before we remove net_lock, this access order must be altered. This is what we do with this commit. We can avoid introducing problem problem c) by even here using the global node list to find the node, before accessing its links. When we loop though the node list we use the own bearer identity as search criteria, thus easily finding the links that are associated to the resetting/disabling bearer. It should be noted that although this method is somewhat slower than the current list traversal, it is in no way time critical. This is only about resetting or deleting links, something that must be considered relatively infrequent events. As a bonus, we can get rid of the mutual pointers between links and bearers. After this commit, pointer dependency go in one direction only: from the link to the bearer. This commit pre-empts introduction of problem c) as described above. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1960516 commit e804861 upstream. Quota disable ioctl starts a transaction before waiting for the qgroup rescan worker completes. However, this wait can be infinite and results in deadlock because of circular dependency among the quota disable ioctl, the qgroup rescan worker and the other task with transaction such as block group relocation task. The deadlock happens with the steps following: 1) Task A calls ioctl to disable quota. It starts a transaction and waits for qgroup rescan worker completes. 2) Task B such as block group relocation task starts a transaction and joins to the transaction that task A started. Then task B commits to the transaction. In this commit, task B waits for a commit by task A. 3) Task C as the qgroup rescan worker starts its job and starts a transaction. In this transaction start, task C waits for completion of the transaction that task A started and task B committed. This deadlock was found with fstests test case btrfs/115 and a zoned null_blk device. The test case enables and disables quota, and the block group reclaim was triggered during the quota disable by chance. The deadlock was also observed by running quota enable and disable in parallel with 'btrfs balance' command on regular null_blk devices. An example report of the deadlock: [372.469894] INFO: task kworker/u16:6:103 blocked for more than 122 seconds. Clear BTRFS_FS_QUOTA_ENABLE flag before the wait and the transaction to request the worker to complete. On transaction start failure, set the BTRFS_FS_QUOTA_ENABLE flag again. These BTRFS_FS_QUOTA_ENABLE flag changes can be done safely since the function btrfs_quota_disable is not called concurrently because of fs_info->subvol_sem. Also check the BTRFS_FS_QUOTA_ENABLE flag in qgroup_rescan_init to avoid another qgroup rescan worker to start after the previous qgroup worker completed. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1960516 commit aad51ca upstream. Add a test that sends large udp packet (which is fragmented) via a stateless nft nat rule, i.e. 'ip saddr set 10.2.3.4' and check that the datagram is received by peer. On kernels without commit 4e1860a ("netfilter: nft_payload: do not update layer 4 checksum when mangling fragments")', this will fail with: cmp: EOF on /tmp/tmp.V1q0iXJyQF which is empty -rw------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 24 22:03 /tmp/tmp.Aaqnq4rBKS -rw------- 1 root root 0 Jan 24 22:03 /tmp/tmp.V1q0iXJyQF ERROR: in and output file mismatch when checking udp with stateless nat FAIL: nftables v1.0.0 (Fearless Fosdick #2) On patched kernels, this will show: PASS: IP statless for ns2-PFp89amx Signed-off-by: Florian Westphal <fw@strlen.de> Signed-off-by: Pablo Neira Ayuso <pablo@netfilter.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Signed-off-by: Paolo Pisati <paolo.pisati@canonical.com>

…egulator BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1963889 [ Upstream commit 323ca76 ] The interrupt pin of the external ethernet phy is used, instead of the enable-gpio pin of the tf-io regulator. This change was made by commit ce8ea7c ("btrfs: don't call btrfs_start_delalloc_roots in flushoncommit"). After that change we started producing that warning, and every now and then a user reports this since the warning happens too often, it spams dmesg/syslog, and a user is unsure if this reflects any problem that might compromise the filesystem's reliability. We can not just lock the sb->s_umount semaphore before calling writeback_inodes_sb(), because that would at least deadlock with filesystem freezing, since at fs/super.c:freeze_super() sync_filesystem() is called while we are holding that semaphore in write mode, and that can trigger a transaction commit, resulting in a deadlock. It would also trigger the same type of deadlock in the unmount path. Possibly, it could also introduce some other locking dependencies that lockdep would report. To fix this call try_to_writeback_inodes_sb() instead of writeback_inodes_sb(), because that will try to read lock sb->s_umount and then will only call writeback_inodes_sb() if it was able to lock it. This is fine because the cases where it can't read lock sb->s_umount are during a filesystem unmount or during a filesystem freeze - in those cases sb->s_umount is write locked and sync_filesystem() is called, which calls writeback_inodes_sb(). In other words, in all cases where we can't take a read lock on sb->s_umount, writeback is already being triggered elsewhere. An alternative would be to call btrfs_start_delalloc_roots() with a number of pages different from LONG_MAX, for example matching the number of delalloc bytes we currently have, in which case we would end up starting all delalloc with filemap_fdatawrite_wbc() and not with an async flush via filemap_flush() - that is only possible after the rather recent commit e076ab2 ("btrfs: shrink delalloc pages instead of full inodes"). However that creates a whole new can of worms due to new lock dependencies, which lockdep complains, like for example: [ 8948.247280] ====================================================== [ 8948.247823] WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected [ 8948.248353] 5.17.0-rc1-btrfs-next-111 #1 Not tainted [ 8948.248786] ------------------------------------------------------ [ 8948.249320] kworker/u16:18/933570 is trying to acquire lock: [ 8948.249812] ffff9b3de1591690 (sb_internal#2){.+.+}-{0:0}, at: find_free_extent+0x141e/0x1590 [btrfs] [ 8948.250638] but task is already holding lock: [ 8948.251140] ffff9b3e09c717d8 (&root->delalloc_mutex){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: start_delalloc_inodes+0x78/0x400 [btrfs] [ 8948.252018] which lock already depends on the new lock. So just adopt the simple approach of calling try_to_writeback_inodes_sb() at btrfs_start_delalloc_flush(). BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1964361 commit bac129d upstream. This driver, like several others, uses a chained IRQ for each GPIO bank, and forwards .irq_set_wake to the GPIO bank's upstream IRQ. As a result, a call to irq_set_irq_wake() needs to lock both the upstream and downstream irq_desc's. Lockdep considers this to be a possible deadlock when the irq_desc's share lockdep classes, which they do by default: ============================================ WARNING: possible recursive locking detected 5.17.0-rc3-00394-gc849047c2473 #1 Not tainted -------------------------------------------- init/307 is trying to acquire lock: c2dfe27c (&irq_desc_lock_class){-.-.}-{2:2}, at: __irq_get_desc_lock+0x58/0xa0 but task is already holding lock: c3c0ac7c (&irq_desc_lock_class){-.-.}-{2:2}, at: __irq_get_desc_lock+0x58/0xa0 other info that might help us debug this: Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 ---- lock(&irq_desc_lock_class); lock(&irq_desc_lock_class); *** DEADLOCK *** May be due to missing lock nesting notation 4 locks held by init/307: #0: c1f29f18 (system_transition_mutex){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: __do_sys_reboot+0x90/0x23c #1: c20f7760 (&dev->mutex){....}-{3:3}, at: device_shutdown+0xf4/0x224 #2: c2e804d8 (&dev->mutex){....}-{3:3}, at: device_shutdown+0x104/0x224 #3: c3c0ac7c (&irq_desc_lock_class){-.-.}-{2:2}, at: __irq_get_desc_lock+0x58/0xa0 stack backtrace: CPU: 0 PID: 307 Comm: init Not tainted 5.17.0-rc3-00394-gc849047c2473 #1 Hardware name: Allwinner sun8i Family unwind_backtrace from show_stack+0x10/0x14 show_stack from dump_stack_lvl+0x68/0x90 dump_stack_lvl from __lock_acquire+0x1680/0x31a0 __lock_acquire from lock_acquire+0x148/0x3dc lock_acquire from _raw_spin_lock_irqsave+0x50/0x6c _raw_spin_lock_irqsave from __irq_get_desc_lock+0x58/0xa0 __irq_get_desc_lock from irq_set_irq_wake+0x2c/0x19c irq_set_irq_wake from irq_set_irq_wake+0x13c/0x19c [tail call from sunxi_pinctrl_irq_set_wake] irq_set_irq_wake from gpio_keys_suspend+0x80/0x1a4 gpio_keys_suspend from gpio_keys_shutdown+0x10/0x2c gpio_keys_shutdown from device_shutdown+0x180/0x224 device_shutdown from __do_sys_reboot+0x134/0x23c __do_sys_reboot from ret_fast_syscall+0x0/0x1c However, this can never deadlock because the upstream and downstream IRQs are never the same (nor do they even involve the same irqchip). If so, a Packet Too Big ICMPV6 message is received. When send again, packets are fragmentized with 1280, they are still rejected with ICMPV6(Packet Too Big) by xfrmi_xmit2(). Since commit 8979b02 ("tpm: Fix reference count to main device") the extra reference used to prevent a premature zero counter is never taken, because the required TPM_CHIP_FLAG_TPM2 flag is never set. Fix this by moving the TPM 2 character device handling from tpm_chip_alloc() to tpm_add_char_device() which is called at a later point in time when the flag has been set in case of TPM2. Commit fdc915f ("tpm: expose spaces via a device link /dev/tpmrm<n>") already introduced function tpm_devs_release() to release the extra reference but did not implement the required put on chip->devs that results in the call of this function. Fix this by putting chip->devs in tpm_chip_unregister(). Finally move the new implementation for the TPM 2 handling into a new function to avoid multiple checks for the TPM_CHIP_FLAG_TPM2 flag in the good case and error cases. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969110 commit c51abd9 upstream. In many cases, keyctl_pkey_params_get_2() is validating the user buffer lengths against the wrong algorithm properties. Fix it to check against the correct properties. Probably this wasn't noticed before because for all asymmetric keys of the "public_key" subtype, max_data_size == max_sig_size == max_enc_size == max_dec_size. However, this isn't necessarily true for the "asym_tpm" subtype (it should be, but it's not strictly validated). Of course, future key types could have different values as well. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969110 commit d6f5e35 upstream. When calling smb2_ioctl_query_info() with invalid smb_query_info::flags, a NULL ptr dereference is triggered when trying to kfree() uninitialised rqst[n].rq_iov array. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969110 commit aea0b9f upstream. Make the name of the anon inode fd "[landlock-ruleset]" instead of "landlock-ruleset". This is minor but most anon inode fds already carry square brackets around their name: [eventfd] [eventpoll] [fanotify] [fscontext] [io_uring] [pidfd] [signalfd] [timerfd] [userfaultfd] For the sake of consistency lets do the same for the landlock-ruleset anon inode fd that comes with landlock. We did the same in 1cdc415 ("uapi, fsopen: use square brackets around "fscontext" [ver #2]") for the new mount api. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969110 [ Upstream commit 18b1ab7 ] Fix a race in the xsk socket teardown code that can lead to a NULL pointer dereference splat. The current xsk unbind code in xsk_unbind_dev() starts by setting xs->state to XSK_UNBOUND, sets xs->dev to NULL and then waits for any NAPI processing to terminate using synchronize_net(). After that, the release code starts to tear down the socket state and free allocated memory. First, setting xs->dev to NULL before waiting for all users to stop using the socket is not correct. The entry to the data plane functions xsk_poll(), xsk_sendmsg(), and xsk_recvmsg() are all guarded by a test that xs->state is in the state XSK_BOUND and if not, it returns right away. But one process might have passed this test but still have not gotten to the point in which it uses xs->dev in the code. In this interim, a second process executing xsk_unbind_dev() might have set xs->dev to NULL which will lead to a crash for the first process. The solution here is just to get rid of this NULL assignment since it is not used anymore. Before commit 42fddcc ("xsk: use state member for socket synchronization"), xs->dev was the gatekeeper to admit processes into the data plane functions, but it was replaced with the state variable xs->state in the aforementioned commit. The second problem is that synchronize_net() does not wait for any process in xsk_poll(), xsk_sendmsg(), or xsk_recvmsg() to complete, which means that the state they rely on might be cleaned up prematurely. This can happen when the notifier gets called (at driver unload for example) as it uses xsk_unbind_dev(). Solve this by extending the RCU critical region from just the ndo_xsk_wakeup to the whole functions mentioned above, so that both the test of xs->state == XSK_BOUND and the last use of any member of xs is covered by the RCU critical section. This will guarantee that when synchronize_net() completes, there will be no processes left executing xsk_poll(), xsk_sendmsg(), or xsk_recvmsg() and state can be cleaned up safely. Note that we need to drop the RCU lock for the skb xmit path as it uses functions that might sleep. Due to this, we have to retest the xs->state after we grab the mutex that protects the skb xmit code from, among a number of things, an xsk_unbind_dev() being executed from the notifier at the same time. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969110 [ Upstream commit fe2640b ] In remove_phb_dynamic() we use &phb->io_resource, after we've called device_unregister(&host_bridge->dev). But the unregister may have freed phb, because pcibios_free_controller_deferred() is the release function for the host_bridge. If there are no outstanding references when we call device_unregister() then phb will be freed out from under us. This has gone mainly unnoticed, but with slub_debug and page_poison enabled it can lead to a crash: PID: 7574 TASK: c0000000d492cb80 CPU: 13 COMMAND: "drmgr" #0 [c0000000e4f075a0] crash_kexec at c00000000027d7dc #1 [c0000000e4f075d0] oops_end at c000000000029608 #2 [c0000000e4f07650] __bad_page_fault at c0000000000904b4 #3 [c0000000e4f076c0] do_bad_slb_fault at c00000000009a5a8 #4 [c0000000e4f076f0] data_access_slb_common_virt at c000000000008b30 Data SLB Access [380] exception frame: R0: c000000000167250 R1: c0000000e4f07a00 R2: c000000002a46100 R3: c000000002b39ce8 R4: 00000000000000c0 R5: 00000000000000a9 R6: 3894674d000000c0 R7: 0000000000000000 R8: 00000000000000ff R9: 0000000000000100 R10: 6b6b6b6b6b6b6b6b R11: 0000000000008000 R12: c00000000023da80 R13: c0000009ffd38b00 R14: 0000000000000000 R15: 000000011c87f0f0 R16: 0000000000000006 R17: 0000000000000003 R18: 0000000000000002 R19: 0000000000000004 R20: 0000000000000005 R21: 000000011c87ede8 R22: 000000011c87c5a8 R23: 000000011c87d3a0 R24: 0000000000000000 R25: 0000000000000001 R26: c0000000e4f07cc8 R27: c00000004d1cc400 R28: c0080000031d00e8 R29: c00000004d23d800 R30: c00000004d1d2400 R31: c00000004d1d2540 NIP: c000000000167258 MSR: 8000000000009033 OR3: c000000000e9f474 CTR: 0000000000000000 LR: c000000000167250 XER: 0000000020040003 CCR: 0000000024088420 MQ: 0000000000000000 DAR: 6b6b6b6b6b6b6ba3 DSISR: c0000000e4f07920 Syscall Result: fffffffffffffff2 [NIP : release_resource+56] [LR : release_resource+48] #5 [c0000000e4f07a00] release_resource at c000000000167258 (unreliable) #6 [c0000000e4f07a30] remove_phb_dynamic at c000000000105648 #7 [c0000000e4f07ab0] dlpar_remove_slot at c0080000031a09e8 [rpadlpar_io] #8 [c0000000e4f07b50] remove_slot_store at c0080000031a0b9c [rpadlpar_io] #9 [c0000000e4f07be0] kobj_attr_store at c000000000817d8c #10 [c0000000e4f07c00] sysfs_kf_write at c00000000063e504 #11 [c0000000e4f07c20] kernfs_fop_write_iter at c00000000063d868 #12 [c0000000e4f07c70] new_sync_write at c00000000054339c #13 [c0000000e4f07d10] vfs_write at c000000000546624 #14 [c0000000e4f07d60] ksys_write at c0000000005469f4 #15 [c0000000e4f07db0] system_call_exception at c000000000030840 #16 [c0000000e4f07e10] system_call_vectored_common at c00000000000c168 To avoid it, we can take a reference to the host_bridge->dev until we're done using phb. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969110 [ Upstream commit 841aee4 ] Put NVMe/TCP sockets in their own class to avoid some lockdep warnings. Sockets created by nvme-tcp are not exposed to user-space, and will not trigger certain code paths that the general socket API exposes. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969107 [ Upstream commit 829cc0e ] The copy test uses the memcpy() to copy data between IO memory spaces. This can trigger an alignment fault error (pasted the error logs below) because memcpy() may use unaligned accesses on a mapped memory that is just IO, which does not support unaligned memory accesses. Fix it by using the correct memcpy API to copy from/to IO memory. CVE-2022-1966 Since 3e135cd ("netfilter: nft_dynset: dynamic stateful expression instantiation"), it is possible to attach stateful expressions to set elements. cd5125d ("netfilter: nf_tables: split set destruction in deactivate and destroy phase") introduces conditional destruction on the object to accomodate transaction semantics. nft_expr_init() calls expr->ops->init() first, then check for NFT_STATEFUL_EXPR, this stills allows to initialize a non-stateful lookup expressions which points to a set, which might lead to UAF since the set is not properly detached from the set->binding for this case. Anyway, this combination is non-sense from nf_tables perspective. This patch fixes this problem by checking for NFT_STATEFUL_EXPR before expr->ops->init() is called. The reporter provides a KASAN splat and a poc reproducer (similar to those autogenerated by syzbot to report use-after-free errors). It is unknown to me if they are using syzbot or if they use similar automated tool to locate the bug that they are reporting. For the record, this is the KASAN splat. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1972905 commit 423ecfe upstream. Make a KVM_REQ_APICV_UPDATE request when creating a vCPU with an in-kernel local APIC and APICv enabled at the module level. Consuming kvm_apicv_activated() and stuffing vcpu->arch.apicv_active directly can race with __kvm_set_or_clear_apicv_inhibit(), as vCPU creation happens before the vCPU is fully onlined, i.e. it won't get the request made to "all" vCPUs. If APICv is globally inhibited between setting apicv_active and onlining the vCPU, the vCPU will end up running with APICv enabled and trigger KVM's sanity check. Mark APICv as active during vCPU creation if APICv is enabled at the module level, both to be optimistic about it's final state, e.g. to avoid additional VMWRITEs on VMX, and because there are likely bugs lurking since KVM checks apicv_active in multiple vCPU creation paths. While keeping the current behavior of consuming kvm_apicv_activated() is arguably safer from a regression perspective, force apicv_active so that vCPU creation runs with deterministic state and so that if there are bugs, they are found sooner than later, i.e. not when some crazy race condition is hit. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1978240 commit 3f65b1e upstream. Current DP driver implementation has adding safe mode done at dp_hpd_plug_handle() which is expected to be executed under event thread context. However there is possible circular locking happen (see blow stack trace) after edp driver call dp_hpd_plug_handle() from dp_bridge_enable() which is executed under drm_thread context. After review all possibilities methods and as discussed on https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/483155/, supporting EDID compliance tests in the driver is quite hacky. As seen with other vendor drivers, supporting these will be much easier with IGT. Hence removing all the related fail safe code for it so that no possibility of circular lock will happen. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1981862 commit d1dc877 upstream. A rare BUG_ON triggered in assoc_array_gc: [3430308.818153] kernel BUG at lib/assoc_array.c:1609! Which corresponded to the statement currently at line 1593 upstream: BUG_ON(assoc_array_ptr_is_meta(p)); Using the data from the core dump, I was able to generate a userspace reproducer[1] and determine the cause of the bug. [1]: https://github.com/brenns10/kernel_stuff/tree/master/assoc_array_gc After running the iterator on the entire branch, an internal tree node looked like the following: NODE (nr_leaves_on_branch: 3) SLOT [0] NODE (2 leaves) SLOT [1] NODE (1 leaf) SLOT [2..f] NODE (empty) In the userspace reproducer, the pr_devel output when compressing this node was: -- compress node 0x5607cc089380 -- free=0, leaves=0 [0] retain node 2/1 [nx 0] [1] fold node 1/1 [nx 0] [2] fold node 0/1 [nx 2] [3] fold node 0/2 [nx 2] [4] fold node 0/3 [nx 2] [5] fold node 0/4 [nx 2] [6] fold node 0/5 [nx 2] [7] fold node 0/6 [nx 2] [8] fold node 0/7 [nx 2] [9] fold node 0/8 [nx 2] [10] fold node 0/9 [nx 2] [11] fold node 0/10 [nx 2] [12] fold node 0/11 [nx 2] [13] fold node 0/12 [nx 2] [14] fold node 0/13 [nx 2] [15] fold node 0/14 [nx 2] after: 3 At slot 0, an internal node with 2 leaves could not be folded into the node, because there was only one available slot (slot 0). Thus, the internal node was retained. At slot 1, the node had one leaf, and was able to be folded in successfully. The remaining nodes had no leaves, and so were removed. By the end of the compression stage, there were 14 free slots, and only 3 leaf nodes. The tree was ascended and then its parent node was compressed. When this node was seen, it could not be folded, due to the internal node it contained. The invariant for compression in this function is: whenever nr_leaves_on_branch < ASSOC_ARRAY_FAN_OUT, the node should contain all leaf nodes. The compression step currently cannot guarantee this, given the corner case shown above. To fix this issue, retry compression whenever we have retained a node, and yet nr_leaves_on_branch < ASSOC_ARRAY_FAN_OUT. This second compression will then allow the node in slot 1 to be folded in, satisfying the invariant. Below is the output of the reproducer once the fix is applied: -- compress node 0x560e9c562380 -- free=0, leaves=0 [0] retain node 2/1 [nx 0] [1] fold node 1/1 [nx 0] [2] fold node 0/1 [nx 2] [3] fold node 0/2 [nx 2] [4] fold node 0/3 [nx 2] [5] fold node 0/4 [nx 2] [6] fold node 0/5 [nx 2] [7] fold node 0/6 [nx 2] [8] fold node 0/7 [nx 2] [9] fold node 0/8 [nx 2] [10] fold node 0/9 [nx 2] [11] fold node 0/10 [nx 2] [12] fold node 0/11 [nx 2] [13] fold node 0/12 [nx 2] [14] fold node 0/13 [nx 2] [15] fold node 0/14 [nx 2] internal nodes remain despite enough space, retrying -- compress node 0x560e9c562380 -- free=14, leaves=1 [0] fold node 2/15 [nx 0] after: 3 Changes ======= DH: - Use false instead of 0. - Reorder the inserted lines in a couple of places to put retained before next_slot. ver #2) - Fix typo in pr_devel, correct comparison to "<=" Fixes: 3cb9895 ("Add a generic associative array implementation.") BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1981864 [ Upstream commit 6b9dbed ] pty_write() invokes kmalloc() which may invoke a normal printk() to print failure message. This can cause a deadlock in the scenario reported by syz-bot below: CPU0 CPU1 CPU2 ---- ---- ---- lock(console_owner); lock(&port_lock_key); lock(&port->lock); lock(&port_lock_key); lock(&port->lock); lock(console_owner); As commit dbdda84 ("printk: Add console owner and waiter logic to load balance console writes") said, such deadlock can be prevented by using printk_deferred() in kmalloc() (which is invoked in the section guarded by the port->lock). But there are too many printk() on the kmalloc() path, and kmalloc() can be called from anywhere, so changing printk() to printk_deferred() is too complicated and inelegant. Therefore, this patch chooses to specify __GFP_NOWARN to kmalloc(), so that printk() will not be called, and this deadlock problem can be avoided. Syzbot reported the following lockdep error: ====================================================== WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected 5.4.143-00237-g08ccc19a-dirty #10 Not tainted ------------------------------------------------------ syz-executor.4/29420 is trying to acquire lock: ffffffff8aedb2a0 (console_owner){....}-{0:0}, at: console_trylock_spinning kernel/printk/printk.c:1752 [inline] ffffffff8aedb2a0 (console_owner){....}-{0:0}, at: vprintk_emit+0x2ca/0x470 kernel/printk/printk.c:2023 but task is already holding lock: ffff8880119c9158 (&port->lock){-.-.}-{2:2}, at: pty_write+0xf4/0x1f0 drivers/tty/pty.c:120 which lock already depends on the new lock. the existing dependency chain (in reverse order) is: -> #2 (&port->lock){-.-.}-{2:2}: __raw_spin_lock_irqsave include/linux/spinlock_api_smp.h:110 [inline] _raw_spin_lock_irqsave+0x35/0x50 kernel/locking/spinlock.c:159 tty_port_tty_get drivers/tty/tty_port.c:288 [inline] <-- lock(&port->lock); tty_port_default_wakeup+0x1d/0xb0 drivers/tty/tty_port.c:47 serial8250_tx_chars+0x530/0xa80 drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_port.c:1767 serial8250_handle_irq.part.0+0x31f/0x3d0 drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_port.c:1854 serial8250_handle_irq drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_port.c:1827 [inline] <-- lock(&port_lock_key); serial8250_default_handle_irq+0xb2/0x220 drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_port.c:1870 serial8250_interrupt+0xfd/0x200 drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_core.c:126 __handle_irq_event_percpu+0x109/0xa50 kernel/irq/handle.c:156 [...] -> #1 (&port_lock_key){-.-.}-{2:2}: __raw_spin_lock_irqsave include/linux/spinlock_api_smp.h:110 [inline] _raw_spin_lock_irqsave+0x35/0x50 kernel/locking/spinlock.c:159 serial8250_console_write+0x184/0xa40 drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_port.c:3198 <-- lock(&port_lock_key); call_console_drivers kernel/printk/printk.c:1819 [inline] console_unlock+0x8cb/0xd00 kernel/printk/printk.c:2504 vprintk_emit+0x1b5/0x470 kernel/printk/printk.c:2024 <-- lock(console_owner); vprintk_func+0x8d/0x250 kernel/printk/printk_safe.c:394 printk+0xba/0xed kernel/printk/printk.c:2084 register_console+0x8b3/0xc10 kernel/printk/printk.c:2829 univ8250_console_init+0x3a/0x46 drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_core.c:681 console_init+0x49d/0x6d3 kernel/printk/printk.c:2915 start_kernel+0x5e9/0x879 init/main.c:713 secondary_startup_64+0xa4/0xb0 arch/x86/kernel/head_64.S:241 -> #0 (console_owner){....}-{0:0}: [...] lock_acquire+0x127/0x340 kernel/locking/lockdep.c:4734 console_trylock_spinning kernel/printk/printk.c:1773 [inline] <-- lock(console_owner); vprintk_emit+0x307/0x470 kernel/printk/printk.c:2023 vprintk_func+0x8d/0x250 kernel/printk/printk_safe.c:394 printk+0xba/0xed kernel/printk/printk.c:2084 fail_dump lib/fault-inject.c:45 [inline] should_fail+0x67b/0x7c0 lib/fault-inject.c:144 __should_failslab+0x152/0x1c0 mm/failslab.c:33 should_failslab+0x5/0x10 mm/slab_common.c:1224 slab_pre_alloc_hook mm/slab.h:468 [inline] slab_alloc_node mm/slub.c:2723 [inline] slab_alloc mm/slub.c:2807 [inline] __kmalloc+0x72/0x300 mm/slub.c:3871 kmalloc include/linux/slab.h:582 [inline] tty_buffer_alloc+0x23f/0x2a0 drivers/tty/tty_buffer.c:175 __tty_buffer_request_room+0x156/0x2a0 drivers/tty/tty_buffer.c:273 tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag+0x93/0x250 drivers/tty/tty_buffer.c:318 tty_insert_flip_string include/linux/tty_flip.h:37 [inline] pty_write+0x126/0x1f0 drivers/tty/pty.c:122 <-- lock(&port->lock); n_tty_write+0xa7a/0xfc0 drivers/tty/n_tty.c:2356 do_tty_write drivers/tty/tty_io.c:961 [inline] tty_write+0x512/0x930 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1045 __vfs_write+0x76/0x100 fs/read_write.c:494 [...] other info that might help us debug this: Chain exists of: console_owner --> &port_lock_key --> &port->lock Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220511061951.1114-2-zhengqi.arch@bytedance.com Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220510113809.80626-2-zhengqi.arch@bytedance.com Fixes: b6da31b ("tty: Fix data race in tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag") Signed-off-by: Qi Zheng <zhengqi.arch@bytedance.com> Acked-by: Jiri Slaby <jirislaby@kernel.org> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Cc: Akinobu Mita <akinobu.mita@gmail.com> Cc: Vlastimil Babka <vbabka@suse.cz> Cc: Steven Rostedt (Google) <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Sasha Levin <sashal@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Kamal Mostafa <kamal@canonical.com> Signed-off-by: Stefan Bader <stefan.bader@canonical.com>

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1981864 commit 863e0d8 upstream. When user_dlm_destroy_lock failed, it didn't clean up the flags it set before exit. For USER_LOCK_IN_TEARDOWN, if this function fails because of lock is still in used, next time when unlink invokes this function, it will return succeed, and then unlink will remove inode and dentry if lock is not in used(file closed), but the dlm lock is still linked in dlm lock resource, then when bast come in, it will trigger a panic due to user-after-free. See the following panic call trace. To fix this, USER_LOCK_IN_TEARDOWN should be reverted if fail. And also error should be returned if USER_LOCK_IN_TEARDOWN is set to let user know that unlink fail. For the case of ocfs2_dlm_unlock failure, besides USER_LOCK_IN_TEARDOWN, USER_LOCK_BUSY is also required to be cleared. Even though spin lock is released in between, but USER_LOCK_IN_TEARDOWN is still set, for USER_LOCK_BUSY, if before every place that waits on this flag, USER_LOCK_IN_TEARDOWN is checked to bail out, that will make sure no flow waits on the busy flag set by user_dlm_destroy_lock(), then we can simplely revert USER_LOCK_BUSY when ocfs2_dlm_unlock fails. Fix user_dlm_cluster_lock() which is the only function not following this. This is because the entry is added to direct_functions, but not removed. Fix this by remove the entry from direct_functions when register_ftrace_direct fails. Also remove the last trailing space from ftrace.c, so we don't have to worry about it anymore. After reading up on how the Ubuntu process was supposed to work, I found that a few things were being broken by our adjustments to it.
I added a README.endless documenting the process including those changes. I also went back and made a commit for my previous endless2 version to get the tooling to respect it correctly.
