❔ About

As I currently wanted to buy a new mobile phone, I wanted to benchmark them.

πŸ’‘ I saw that Fairphone was not listed... so here we go 😸

Hi @adriens

Thanks for your contribution, a few points:

  1. If possible I think it's more appropriate to have this page be similar to the iPhone, Google Pixel, and Nokia pages where we do not discuss features related to the product that are not related to the support cycle itself. The description of the company and their goal is fine I think.

  2. Where did the sources for the end of life dates come from? The eol section usually refers to if the device is still receiving security updates usually, not the end of production or how long parts will be available

We can give the Fairphone 4 a tentative eol date from this source: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/4405858006545-FP4-Fairphone-OS-Android-11-

It seems to me that the Fairphone 3 and 3+ are still supported with software updates according to this tweet: https://twitter.com/fairphone/status/1576937633694875649

I agree with the Fairphone 2 classification for end of software support, seems to come from here: https://www.fairphone.com/en/2023/01/09/an-update-on-fairphone-2/ but production for it seems to have ended sometime in 2018 or 2019 from the wording in this article: https://www.fairphone.com/en/2019/03/22/proving-our-case-fairphone-2-is-sold-out/

Unable to verify the Fairphone 1 data, seems to be quite the lack of information.

I would also name the eol column so it's clear what it means, not sure if "Supported" here is meaning the timeline of how long replacement parts will be available for, given how important that seems to be to Fairphone I think it's reasonable to have how long they plan to have replacement parts for in the description text, while having the software lifecycle in the eol column.

Gentle ping to @captn3m0 as I believe you worked on the other mobile pages, do you disagree with anything I said?

In fact the iPhone was the page I used to create this one.

The end of life dates indeed here are the date where the phone stopped from being distributed. I guess security is more related to the Android part.

I could dig further by making an issue to Fairphone community : what do you think ?

βœ‰οΈ to Fairphone support below

❔ About

I'm currently working on adding Fairphone to https://github.com/endoflife-date repo.
Still I have some questions to be able to finish adding Fairphone data as I have End of Sales data, but not the real end of life (related to security updates in fact).

🎯 Questions

Can you please provide me when (date YYYY-MM-DD) security updates won't be pushed anymore to :

  • FP1
  • FP2
  • FP3
  • FP4 (if data available)

This should focus on the product, not the company.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairphone_1

> The last batch of devices of the second production run was sold in February 2015. No more Fairphone 1 were produced, with the company focusing on developing the phone's successor Fairphone 2

> In July 2017, Fairphone announced in an e-mail to their buyers that they were sorry not to be able to pursue the release of Android 4.4 β€œKitKat” for the Fairphone 1
…ir buyers that they were sorry not to be able to pursue the release of Android 4.4 β€œKitKat” for the Fairphone 1

As of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairphone_2 :

> and has since received both hardware improvements and major software updates, initially shipping with Android 5 "Lollipop" and running Android 10 "Queen Cake" as of November 2021

As of https://www.fairphone.com/en/2019/03/22/proving-our-case-fairphone-2-is-sold-out/

> , while we have one remaining batch of refurbished units which will come back in stock in the coming weeks, but when those are sold, it will mark the end of Fairphone 2 sales. While the Fairphone 2 will no longer be available in our webshop as of now, we will continue to support the Fairphone 2 and the sale of Fairphone 2 spare parts.
As of https://www.fairphone.com/en/2021/09/02/fairphone-3-update/

> End of sale does not mean end of life

While we are ending the sale of the Fairphone 3, it does not mean it’s the end of its life! In fact, because of our unique approach for our Android phones, you can still upgrade your phone with camera modules and spare parts. We are also planning to update the Fairphone 3 to Android 11 in 2022

So we are in Adnroid 11 , as of https://endoflife.date/android, it is still covered by Security Support ;-p

Dates seem incorrect.

FP3 seems to be getting updates: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360048139032-FP3-Fairphone-OS-release-notes, https://forum.fairphone.com/t/fp3-fp3-fairphone-os-updates-changelog-download-links/60430

FP2 seems to be supported till March 2023:

We will release the last software update for the FP2 in March 2023. This means that the phone will no longer get security updates. Once the security update expires (some time in May 2023) some apps will stop working and we don't recommend connecting the phone to the Internet.

Ref: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018643677

Similarly, FP1 was supported till July 2017:

In July 2017, we announced to Fairphone 1 owners that we have stopped supporting our first phone. This means that:
> We no longer sell spare parts for the Fairphone 1, and;
> Have stopped developing any software upgrades beyond Android 4.2.

  1. Both 3 and 3+ seem to be discontinued. I'm guessing discontinued = releaseDate(R+1)? Could you validate and fix please?
  2. Lets add links to relevant pages for the phones as well (https://shop.fairphone.com/en/fairphone-3 for eg).
