This has been requested a couple times, e.g. myst-templates/templates#23 & #84

It requires updating the template.yml schema to explicitly point to the template file (rather than just expecting it to be in the same place as the template.yml) and some bookkeeping to make sure relative path resolution is all ok. I don't think either of those are very big blockers though?
