Bug Report

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. pip install numpy
  2. pip install pyarrow==0.15.1
  3. pip install perspective-python

Expected Result:

I would expect the install to flag any additional required dependencies [y/n] and complete successfully. Full output below, apologies it's long.

Do you have cmake installed and on your path? The error is saying that which cmake returned no results, and the command cmake didn't exist on your path. Make sure to install a relatively recent cmake.

@timkpaine I didn't (couldn't see that dependency in the docs, but probably my bad). I have installed now, and getting a different error. Is there are particular version of MS Visual Studio that is also a requirement?

@twmeggs right now VS 17 with VC 15 https://github.com/finos/perspective/blob/master/python/perspective/setup.py#L189

There's a PR to make it configurable but it's not merged yet, it will compile with VS 15/VC 14 as well. It will compile with VS 13/VC12 but you probably need to build pyarrow yourself.

@timkpaine thank you. That's probably the issue. I have cmake installed now, but it's throwing another error. I'm running under VS 19. I'll try with VS 17 / VC 15 now.

@twmeggs I would expect it to work fine under VS19, but you should be careful if its mixing different runtimes. Please share any errors if you see them, I will look to fix them. Be aware there are some lingering windows numerical issues when using numpy types #926

@timkpaine thanks. I've for a fresh install of VS 17. I've also added the following path to my user path environment variable and the system path environment variable:

Its looking for Visual Studio 14 2015. If you grab the tarball and modify setup.py to be Visual Studio 15 2017, it should be fine. Alternatively, you can pip install from master (it looks like i bumped to 15 2017 recently), or wait a few days for the next release which will have it be a configurable argument

CMake suite maintained and supported by Kitware (kitware.com/cmake).

@MarcSkovMadsen thats a different error, yours is failing in cmake itself. If you activate the virtual env what is the result of cmake --version? Also what is the result of where cmake

That doesnt look right at all! can you do the following and try again:

set PATH=C:\Users\masma\source\repos\orsteddcsmarketsanalytics\sandbox\.venv\Scripts;%PATH%

and try again (alternatively you can update your path from control panel

FYI @timkpaine . I've tried to pip install perspective-python in a cmd.exe prompt. I get the same error.

@MarcSkovMadsen it looks like you pip installed cmake? can you install it directly from kitware https://cmake.org/download/ and remove the python script, no idea what that does or how it works but its clearly it does not work properly

Apologies for raising this question yet again but trying to run 'pip install perspective-python' after having run 'pip install --upgrade pip setuptools wheel' and 'pip3 install --upgrade pip' and still get the same error : "Failed to build perspective-python
ERROR: Could not build wheels for perspective-python which use PEP 517 and cannot be installed directly". Could you please advise whether this is expected still and if there is a fix for this. Much much appreciated.

@dragi86 this is almost certainly complaining about missing the cmake.exe executable on the path. See https://perspective.finos.org/docs/md/development.html#system-dependencies
