8.5 Why do you charge if I change my domain?

Please understand that per our licensing model:

Flowplayer is licensed by domain name, not by player instance. A licensed domain name normally cannot be changed, a new domain would require a new license.

  • Flowplayer licenses are yours forever and never expire
  • Contrary to many competitors, we do not charge annually but one time only
  • Flowplayer does not phone home, all validation happens inside the player, there are no external licensing servers involved, no Internet connection is needed, the domain name is the only validation criterion
  • we do not enforce upgrade cycles
  • we do not impose a limit on page impressions, or charge for API requests
  • we do not track usage (except for Flowplayer Drive, the hosting service)

and therefore we cannot revoke / disable issued licenses. So while the licensing model usually is in favor of the customer, it means you need a new license even after a very short use, once you switch to a different domain. We offer multi-license packages for customers who need many short-lived licensed (like event sites).

This works like domain name registration: if you register foo.com and later want to use bar.com , you'll have to pay the additional registration fee for bar.com without the possibility to simply change foo.com to bar.com .
