Cannot start font forge on OSX mountain lion 10.8.5

Is FontForge supposed to work on Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5?

I followed the installation instructions - I already had the latest XQuartz installed. When I start FontForge, I see a message which says:

Then in the logs I see:

Any idea what the problem could be?

I found that changing my 'Security & Privacy > General > Allow applications downloaded from:' settings to Anywhere allowed me to start FontForge. Not sure what the problem is here:
