Snarl pretty much runs itself, and doesn't really need any specific pre-configuration. Applications will automatically register with Snarl - usually when they are installed for the first time - and can then start generating notifications.
By default, notifications are displayed on-screen in the form of a small rounded rectangle just like the one at the top of this page.
