Maybe it was me again? Updating instead of a new install? Classical discovery after the new method had crashed at some point in between. I didn't try to reproduce it. |

Okay, added two directories to config.xml, but neither shows in File
Systems, and gerbera doesn't start scanning. Just showing 0 Total Media
Files.
What should I do from here? Add Item?
I called gerbera with
-d --import-mode grb --debug --logfile trace_3
Wrong place in config.xml? Added the directories between
<import hidden-files="no">
and
<scripting script-charset="UTF-8">
[Edited: forgotten to mention that INotify Autoscan Directories in web-Config shows No Entries.)

Sounds like one of your files is producing a severe error that would be
good to investigate. That means run with --debug.
As said to have reproducable result you should go for a <directory
location="/media/music" mode="inotify" recursive="yes"/> in your
config.xml

Having not heard any veto, that's what I did. Removed 6 files, added another 13, on a drive of 2.4 T, containing some 12.000 media files. Re-inserted (let's not forget, it is read-only), started gerbera. |

I realized that it might be a good idea to have some example config file generated that can be adapted by deleting entries. This not intended to be used without changes, but may help to understand all the settings. See #2869 |

Let's look again at what was described further up, and the intentions. Any new user will probably want to start by adding media data (folders) to the system after the very first start. While gerbera is totally good at creating an adequate config.xml, basic database, very easy for the new user, the task of adding media data is almost impossible to get right at the first go. Why is that so? Because there are 4 respective five different ways. And not compatible, but different with respect to function, permanency, update. And most users will not want to read some twenty pages before adding media data. In short, at least additionally to starting well from scratch as such, the new user can expect a helping hand at adding first data. Here different possibilities arise, e.g.:

Still under this topic, though slightly different: While ...73... seemed okay, after updating (?) to ...74... some directories were gone in Database as well as on my BubbleUPnP-client. Strange enough, the file counts in the overview remain unchanged. [Edit: The missing directories and files did not pop up after the restart of 73. Taken together with the virtualurl error, I had no choice but to rm the databases, and start 73 with the existing, unmodified config.xml; re-harvesting the media directories. Everything is back to normal. 74 ought to be withdrawn urgently!] |

I encounter a problem with the topic Add Item.
I have a sub-dir on the drive with 118 files. All properly imported by gerbera when I started with no db-file, and clicked on Add Item of a higher sub-dir. Everything okay.
Shutting down gerbera. Removed the external drive and added some more files into that sub-dir on that drive. Plugged the drive in, started gerbera. I have no Autoscan enabled (makes no sense on an external drive mounted ro). In the web interface, I navigated to that sub-dir with the additional files in File System until it showed, and clicked Add Item. A light blue line at the bottom confirmed the addition.
However, despite all refresh, logout && login, these files don't show, neither in Database of the web interface nor on BubbleUPnP. Though something must have happened, because they do show in the Database view under Recently Added. (Edited: they are also counted on the overview page under Media Files, where the number have been incremented.)
To which location were they added?
Debug shows a warning:
warning: No AutoscanDir found for /...
I initiated a search on BubbleUPnP for one of the file names, in case they had been added elsewhere, but no.
Is my logic incorrect when I assume that a 'successful addition' according to the status line and listing of these files under Recently Added should mean that they have been added?
Okay, so I navigated again to that sub-dir in File System, this time clicking Autoscan Item, the scan started (so informs me the blue status line). From here onwards in red "The system encountered an error", and gerbera isn't running any longer (ps doesn't show it). No further lines in the debug file.
Restarted gerbera, the log now contains a line
Loading autoscan location: /....; recursive: false, mt: 81/Audio | Image | Video, last_modified: unset
and gerbera dies again without any trace in the debug. Now I can't get it to run any more. It will die at each restart, with the following log: (I have removed the local directories for privacy reasons)
When I move the two db-files out of the way, it starts properly with an empty database.
Before I delete the database(s) to repopulate it from scratch, I think it might be useful to ask if you have a specific interest in some file; in- or output ...? If need be, I could put these two files back ... .
Just give me your ideas on this, please.
