Describe the project you are working on

A tcg with a focus on flexibility, consistency, and competition!

Describe the problem or limitation you are having in your project

I use a vertical monitor, and space is wasted in the docks.

Describe the feature / enhancement and how it helps to overcome the problem or limitation

With 3/4 panels stacked in one column, you can use the space more efficiently!

Describe how your proposal will work, with code, pseudo-code, mock-ups, and/or diagrams

I imagine it will work similar to a grid container.
Or even similar to the way it works now, just with a larger grid to occupy.

It could be used in conjunction with this feature request to make a very nice dock interface: #10005

Here is a mockup of how it could look with a 4x1 layout on a vertical monitor:

If this enhancement will not be used often, can it be worked around with a few lines of script?

This isn't a showstopper, so there isn't really a workaround outside of shuffling panels more frequently.

This is a quality of life enhancement.

Is there a reason why this should be core and not an add-on in the asset library?

Because the dock is a core feature, and this would improve the general UI experience.
