From reading implementations of StartAsync (I can find two: services.Manager and services.BasicService), I have to agree with @pstibrany. AFAICS "child operation contexts" would only describe the services.Manager implementation, which just acts as a proxy to its managed Services. The current documentation describes the context usage well IMO.

@pstibrany ugh, you're right. It only implements part of it (at least the StartAsync method). This is one reason I wish Go had explicit implementations (as Rust traits do), would make reading code a lot easier :/

firstly, "for service own context" is nongrammatical -- it should at least be "for the service's own context".
I lost a week because I was passing in a timeout context, thinking that it would be used for the startup phase only. I am trying to make it more clear that the context is persisted inside the service object and used repeatedly.

Agree that the language could be improved, but the PR changes the meaning of the comment :) I think the following would be the right phrasing (I refer to ctx as the argument):

Maybe the usage of the service context should be documented better (to avoid the type of rabbit hole @ywwg descended into)?

Discussed privately with @ywwg. Paraphrased:
There is only one method that starts the service, and it takes a context, that is then passed to the service.
Context is "not used repeatedly" but during a lifetime of the service. If context becomes "finished", service will stop. This is a property of BasicService implementation.
Let's fix the grammar part. Tying lifecycle of the service with cancellation of the context may be too strong requirement for generic Service contract.

I believe the users of this library may want to ommit more headers than those. To do so I've changed how the middleware is initialize to optionally add more headers to the list. Also I've added a unit test to make sure the behavior works as expected. Also I've added an optional configuration parameter to the server to set LogRequestHeaders from there. This parameter was already an option in the log middleware but was not exposed in the server. Even if native histograms are enabled, the conventional histograms are still maintained and presented as before to scrapers incapabale of scraping native histograms. This commit also includes an update of prometheus/client_golang to v1.14.0 as that is the earliest release supporting native histograms. Native histograms were tested previously in the sparse-histograms branch without any problems. This commit obsoletes the sparse-histograms branch. The histograms request_message_bytes and response_message_bytes are left as conventional histograms for now. Maybe they would work well as native histograms with a bucket factor of 2, as high resolution is not the aim here. But we can decide about that once we have gathered more experience with the native histograms for request_duration_seconds. The settings for limiting the bucket count (i.e. NativeHistogramMaxBucketNumber = 100 and NativeHistogramMinResetDuration = 1h) are both conservative and most likely good enough for the expected use cases. We can make them configurable later, if users feel the need. The idea here is to not add too many knobs prematurely and thereby avoid confusion.
