Phantom spots on map in Levels 8 and 9 #256
Comments
Those built-up spots come from another source, VMAP0. They're not indicative of what's been mapped in OSM. I'd support deriving this layer from OSM data instead, though in some places just about anything would be better than the 20+ year old VMAP data. |
I think we all would, but it's not obvious how.
At the SOTM-US hack days we looked at Natural Earth's shapefile, and it wasn't suitable. There are some regional sources (e.g. in the UK) that are better than VMAP0 but I'm not aware of any substitutes. See #61, which this was originally raised in. |
These changes make sure that more important roads are not rendered smaller than less important roads. - Render motorways from z12 on wider. - Render trunk, primary, secondary, and tertiary on z13 and z14 narrower. - Render casing on tertiary link wider. This solves gravitystorm#256.
I think it's worth to look at this again now. |
Currently, we use VMAP0-data instead of OSM-data to indicate built-up areas on zoom levels 8 and 9. This PR replaces the VMAP0-data with the OSM landcover data. Resolves gravitystorm#256.

In the map center, you can see a number of grey spots (usually representing something like residential areas). But in OSM data, they do not exist. I made sure the tiles get re-rendered. They appear on map levels 8 and 9.
Actually, for the cases I checked, the areas represented would make sense for settlements, so I wonder where they disappeared. But that's a different matter.
