Overview

Create scripts for interviewing Hack for LA climate tech projects to understand key pain points, what works & what doesn't work in the process of securing funding.

Action Items

  • Create email template for reaching out to projects
  • Create interview script
  • Go through 'browse projects' on slack finding all climate/environment projects that have ever existed in HackforLA & list them in the resources section in this issue, with the links to those projects
  • Connect with Evon for email templates
  • Review all the comments below and
    • make a list of anything that does not seem to be addressed by items in the resources and instructions. (e.g. there is a question in the first comment about engagement strategy "How many times do we reach-out before we disengage?" that is not answered in the Research document).
    • if there are answers, pair them together into a FAQ for this issue
  • Add BOP Likert scale for level of disclosure
  • Go through brigades and find pass climate projects to interview
  • Find CFA projects in slack
  • Brigade project index: db of projects across the brigade
  • Add an excel sheet tracking all the projects I am interviewing for (internal ecosystem), progress, etc...
  • Release the dependency on Issue User interviews with Projects #42 & Create/Refine Personas #11

EMAIL SCRIPT
What are the most important messages to convey in the email script?
How many times do we reach-out before we disengage?
If they don't want to interview, should we send them a survey (we can make more quant or qual) to complete?
Ways to incentivize (trading interviews, resources, etc...)
What platforms are we using to reach out to possible participants on?

EMAIL SCRIPT
What are the most important messages to convey in the email script?
1. We want to help future climate tech projects in their journey of securing funding
2. We want to know whether they secured funding for their project and what was the process of achieving that
3. We want to know what pain points they faced, and what helped, in the process of securing funding

How many times do we reach-out before we disengage?
Maybe we can identify 2-3 key people in the project & try them one by one if the first person doesn't respond.

If they don't want to interview, should we send them a survey (we can make more quant or qual) to complete?
This could be the last resort? After a couple of interviews we can get enough insight to make a qualitative survey.

Ways to incentivize (trading interviews, resources, etc...)
We can try adding a line appreciating their project in the email, which might make them more likely to respond.

What platforms are we using to reach out to possible participants on?
First email & then perhaps slack?

Interview script

  • Follows same begining format Evon used with usability testing
  • Gains project details initalllly before turning towards painpoints
  • Funding experience is asked about in a pretty open-ended way
  • Wrapping up by asking if there is any important information they would like to share

Prior to interviewing I will:

  • Gain more information about what thier project is beforehand
  • Learn more about securing funding for project
  • Practice questions so they are more natural
  • Will ask someone to join me as interviewer or notetaker

In order to reach out to people, following things are required -

  • Calendly for the project
  • GreenEarthOS website to be up-to-date
  • Link to the events on the GreenEarthOS
  • Review the questionnaire of the research plan

Group exercise is needed to rearrange the question to make it more quantitative kind of thing. For now it is more of descriptive, we need to redefine it to yes or no/ or with 0-6 scale.

About creating quantitative questions from the qualitative ones: I think that it might be the wrong way to go about it. I think that it would be beneficial to interview some people first and create survey questions based on their answers to test the validity of it in the population. Otherwise, we might as well just ask the same qualitative questions in a survey and do a thematic analysis such as an affinity map. Just would not be able to probe based on the answer or ask clarifying questions.

Also, has anyone done a literature review on the problem space?

Progress: Tried to think about possible ways to create quant survey questions from the qual interview questions. See 2 previous comments.
Blockers: Stuck on identifying the process to use.
Availability: variable.
ETA: depends on the method chosen.

@PLoiya Created a SurveyMonkey version of the script, turning some of the questions into quant questions with discrete answers. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/93692SR

Next step: Feedback from the group before proceeding further.
