Guppe Groups Frequently Asked Questions

How can I support Guppe?

Join our platform cooperative on OpenCollective. Supporters don't just keep Guppe going financially, they also make the decisions for Guppe by voting in our Loomio group.

How do create a group?

Groups are created on-demand. When you search for a group or tag one in a post, it will be created for you if it does not already exist

How do I join a group?

Visit the group page in your fediverse app and follow it.

How do I post to a group?

Just mention the group in a public post. Your post will be shared with all other group members.

How do I delete a group?

Members can delete all the posts they've made to a group and unfollow it to leave the group, but the empty group will remain in case someone else wants to use it in the future. The empty group won't be associated with previous members in any way.

Who owns a group?

No one. Groups do not have owners.

How can I see a group's member list?

Guppe member lists are not currently public. Your fediverse app may be able to show you some other members it knows about (e.g. other people on your server), but the full list is not available. There is interest in making an opt-in public listing (see #22), and we are currently fundraising on OpenCollective to support feature development like this

Why can't I see the past history of some groups?

Partly because of how the fediverse works: if no one on your server is following a group, then Guppe wouldn't have had any reason to send past activity your way. Partly because of Mastodon's design: the past history of a group is available, so Mastodon could fetch it and show it to you when you viewed the profile, but it does not. We have a feature proposal to help fill in history once you join a group (see #74), and we are currently fundraising on OpenCollective to support feature development like this

Why isn't the group history viewable on the Guppe website?

It was removed due to popular demand from users and an older version of Guppe that didn't understand how Mastodon communicates desired post visibility. Going forward, decisions like this are made by supporters on OpenCollective, so a consent-based public listing could be added if chosen by supporters.

What moderation tools are available for Guppe Groups?

At present, you have just the individual moderation tools from your fediverse app. If someone is making inappropriate or spam posts to your group, you can block them and report them to their server admins. I would very much like to develop more moderation tooling (see moderation issue tag), please support the project on OpenCollective to fund this work.

How can I change a group's name/description/icon?

There isn't any way to do this yet, but it's something I'd very much like to develop.

Is Guppe Groups a cooperative?

At present, Guppe is an informal cooperative. It is managed by Immers Space, a registered worker-owned cooperative, and we are using the platform cooperative model we developed for Immers Space software as a model for Guppe Groups. However, Guppe members don't currently have the legal guarantees that Immers Space members gain from our bylaws. If supporters raise the funds to cover the legal costs and vote to spend them on this, I would be more than happy to formalize Guppe's cooperative structure.
