Seattle DApp Hackathon with Ethereum and IPFS people 🌐 #188
Comments
My family is due to have a baby ~nov 9th, so whooo knows about my availability around then : ) |
We could also pair this with the Ethereum meetup crew |
Yeah, a joint Eth/Ipfs meetup would also be pretty cool. Something like "Cascadia Decentralized" |
@whyrusleeping @kumavis have you read through the How to plan a meetup guide? It's here in the ipfs/community repo but I don't know if anything links to it. This is a good opportunity to test out that info and see what needs to be added, updated or re-worded. Let me know what else you want help with. cc @RichardLitt |
@whyrusleeping happy to have a chat with you about setting it up, if you need help, too. |
@whyrusleeping and @RichardLitt if you two could have an initial call, that would be super helpful. @RichardLitt is more familiar with setting up Meetups and will have more insight (I'm still learning, so this is a good chance for me to follow along and help where I can). |
fyi, Seattle ethereum meetup is doing an event Nov 7th where Digix will be speaking |
Could we contact the Etherum people about doing a double bill? |
@RichardLitt certainly |
I agree. Digix and IPFS are pretty different. |
|
@RichardLitt , could you let me know what you'd like to do your presentation on so I can work it into the introduction? |
@kennyrowe I think @whyrusleeping would be doing the talk; I'm currently traveling on the east coast. @whyrusleeping Want to give a talk here? I can help out with assets or planning for a combined meetup, if you need any help. @CRekhow and I set this up in Boston a couple of months ago, https://www.meetup.com/Boston-Ethereum-Enthusiasts/events/230202901/. Also available via phone - dm me on twitter if you want to chat about the setup. |
@RichardLitt sounds good. @whyrusleeping I've got a room booked for Nov 15th at Beacon Hill Library 6:30 - 7:45. Will that work for the meetup? |
Ping @whyrusleeping |
I don't think I will be available that day. I will report back once my schedule for this month settles down... |
@whyrusleeping ok if that doesn't work should we look at December dates? |
Yeah! @whyrusleeping would December work? |
im gone dec 20->jan 3 |
@kumavis @wanderer, created the event at the Seattle IPFS Meetup page to gauge interest for the hackathon https://www.meetup.com/Seattle-IPFS-Meetup/events/236101964 |
WRT to Seattle IPFS hackathon:
from consensys / vidroll partner |
me and @wanderer identified feb 6-14 as ideal seattle haxx0rs time |
Feb 6,7,8 and maybe 9th (though less likely) work for me. That weekend i've got a family thing. |
I can start working on getting a space ready lined up for Feb 6-8th. I'll
post more details as I have them.

hey @flyingzumwalt @RichardLitt Originally this was more of a get together amongst active ipfs and ethereum devs, and has evolved into more of a public hackathon. That speaks to how excited people are about these technologies. so maybe we can do something like this: For the public portion: Considering renting a big ol' Airbnb for out-of-town folks. But would like to know how many people. |
That's awesome! I will definitely be able to help with this. I'll get back to you next week, if that's alright! |
@kumavis can you tell me a bit about how you chose these dates? Public Hackathons are usually on weekends so people with 9 to 5 day jobs can participate. Also, three days is a long time for a public hackathon. Given @whyrusleeping's time constraints, I see that the weekend (Feb 11+12) isn't an option. Are you thinking to just do public stuff in the evenings on the 6-8, or were you planning to do it all-day? |
@kumavis very cool idea! ❤️ thanks for organizing. good for all of us to hang out more. note of caution: this is a big time investment for everyone. we should have a pretty clear agenda hammered out before we show up -- yes we should have room for serendipity (maybe explicitly scheduled), but there's a ton of things we already know we want to do together, so we should have a very clear plan of things we want to get done then -- since our time together is so valuable, we shouldn't waste it, and we can probably do a ton of cool stuff in that time. We should also have a clear way to involve others/general public. We dont want all our time to be sucked up by answering questions, though it IS good to dedicate time to that (fostering community, teaching people, making better docs, etc). I find that it's best to clearly time box everything and have a decided-upon schedule before the week rolls in. If this happens, I will try to show up for some or all of that time, but i can't guarantee it yet. |
While I think it is valuable to make it a public event, Hackathon schedule proposal: 2/05 Public Sunday Night Talks: (ethereum, ipfs, metamask, etc) 2/09 Wednesday Cafe Hack: drop-ins welcome 2/10 Friday Due Online: submit and review submissions 2/11 Saturday Drinks: get dranks |
@FlySwatter I have a tripod, and a lapel microphone. I have a not so nice camera too that I can bring as a backup. |
@whyrusleeping I think we are under represented on the IPFS side. you should still talk! or just show a neat demo! would be nice after a high level talk from @jbenet to see something concrete |
@ALL i need your other contact infos (frankie.pangilinan@consensys.net)... please shoot me an email of
|
@frankiebee thank you for pinging me! Here is my info:
I'll bring my swimming shorts for the hottub! \o/ |
Ah, @evilpacket will be joining us on the 6th to break in all the apps, can we arrange some accommodation for him that night? |
@diasdavid their shouldnt be a problem of space at the airbnb |
@evilpacket Wellcome! for how long will you be joining us? |
@kumavis how is the development of piping the eth chain from parity to js-ipfs? I'm thinking to take some usb sticks with it so that everyone gets it faster (it was painful to download it last time in Shanghai, the internet didn't help). Is there a |
@diasdavid Airbnb stuffs: @kumavis said he would bring air mattress but just an Fyi their are 4 bedrooms 5 beds (not including air mattress) I Will let you guys figure out who is most comfortable sleeping in rooms or not in rooms etc. i dont particularly want to make those decisions for you guys. David if you so desire you could give up your spot at the Airbnb for @evilpacket PS we will not take help on paying for the AirBnb it is covered already and y'all have nothing to worry about 😄 |
Gosh now that i look at it it dosent look like we have a ton of space but we also dont have "any one queued" to stay their. |
@evilpacket meet @apmilen he has a spot you can crash at for the hackathon. |
@frankiebee @apmilen appreciate a couch or floor, really anyplace would be amazing. Lots of new people to meet \o/ |
@evilpacket i usually get ahold of @apmilen aka Andy here https://dapphub.chat/direct/zandy his handle is zandy on that chat |
@FlySwatter if you are doing slides for your talk Sunday night please PR them here: https://github.com/MetaMask/IPFS-Ethereum-Hackathon Please put them in the slides folder in a folder with your name we will be using one laptop for the presentations |
More details here: https://www.meetup.com/Seattle-Ethereum-Meetup/events/237147519/ |
@evilpacket send me an email with your contact info: |
Hey everyone, did tonight's event get advertised to other meetups in the area? I see only 28 Yes RSVPs, which seems quite low. Most meetups eth or ipfs have usually many more. It's likely that interested people didn't see any announcements -- can we blast out to various groups now? It's super late but better than not. |
@jbenet I did try and get the word out with other groups, but the real issue is probably that today is Super Bowl Sunday. |
Yeah, apologies for that, none of our organizers had the super bowl on their calendars. We will be video streaming & recording, and posting later, so you could think of it as a filming? |
Oh hah I didn't even realize. Makes sense :) Q: Do we have a good recording setup, for the talks? |
It looks like we have a decent setup, with lavalier mic and a camera on a tripod. |
Quality over quantity

Speakers: I'm editing up the talks into individual videos, if you want your slides edited into your talk, please submit your deck asap. You can just send them to me by any means, keybase is pretty sweet, we have a github folder for slides, too. |
@FlySwatter here's my slides http://apm.keybase.pub/dapphub.key |
@FlySwatter my slides are here: https://ipfs.io/ipfs/Qme51FQycp922BN83u8KXUYKJAxVAtPJbk1rxxN26934pN |
thanks for coming all - I think we can close this one : ) |
@kumavis I heard that the stickers never arrived for this event - so sorry! Not sure what happened with the order, but would love to order a bunch and send them to y'all. What is a good address to ship them to? |
@skylarnorris sent an email, thanks/ |
@kumavis and I are wanting to plan an ipfs meetup in seattle. Date time and location are still all up in the air, but i'm thinking that it will be some time in november.
More details to follow.
