2016 Dec 8 - IPFS Meetup in Montreal #87
Comments
This sounds pretty awesome! |
thanks for posting @frabrunelle ! feel free to post a link to this issue in ipfs/ipfs#107 as well, that will poke a lot of watchers. hope it's excellent! |
How did it go? :D |
It went great! @didiercf and I presented ipfs (which I believe was one of the first presentation about ipfs in French), our website and our future projects. We debated a lot about whether ipfs or Maidsafe was the best decentralized tech. There was no clear winner unfortunately. 😁 People had some interesting ideas, the best ones were a temper-proof medical record project and a project to use ipfs over Montréal's mesh network. Unfortunately, the guy who was supposed to film was sick and couldn't come. @frabrunelle made a presentation about Maidsafe, and it gave me some interesting ideas for what I will build next. The Maidsafe network monitors how many nodes have a copy of a given object, and it would be interesting if ipfs.pics tells you in the same way how many nodes are storing each picture. Users are also anonymous in maidsafe, and I want to experiment with ipfs over Tor for my ipfs.pics seedbox at home. If I can make it work well, I will open source it so that anyone can replicate any ipfs.pics installation, not only the official one. Anonymity is more important in this context for the resilience of the objects than speed. @jbenet: Does ipfs work over Tor? And if it does, can it be configured in a way that it will not leak my other available IPs? Maybe running it in a container and proxy everything through Tor? |
I finally made a blog post about the SAFE + IPFS Meetup 😃 https://montreal.safenetwork.org/2016/01/02/safe-ipfs-meetup-slides/ It just contains the slides of the two presentations and a group photo. I wanted the presentation to be filmed by my good friend Olivier Jobin, but he forgot to show up haha 😛 (and feel asleep so he wasn't answering when I tried to call him). I'll try my best to have the presentations filmed next time. I will definitely be organizing other meetups in collaboration with the IPFS community! It was really fun 😄 |
Nice! Thanks! |
Closing this issue as the meetup has happened, thank you for organizing it, let us know when the next one happens :) |
Sure, I'll let you know :-) I'm planning to start a new meetup group called "Decentralized Web Montreal" and the first meetup will likely be in February! |
@frabrunelle Let me know! I'll be in Montréal in February. Can I help you out with it? |
Hi everyone,
I've been following the progress of IPFS for many months, but this is actually my first time interacting with the IPFS community on GitHub. 😄
You might know me from my involvement in the SAFE Network community.
I want to organize one last meetup for the SAFE Network Montreal meetup group before the end of the year and I thought it would be really fun to invite the IPFS community to join us!
Date and time: Tuesday, December 8, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Location: On the second floor of the Bitcoin Embassy
RSVP: Facebook event
There will be two presentations: one about the SAFE Network and one about IPFS.
The first presentation will be given by myself. I will talk about the SAFE Launcher, the SAFE Network API and the upcoming RFCs.
The second presentation will be given by @cloutier and @didiercf. Half of their talk will be about IPFS and the other half will be about ipfs.pics, an IPFS app that they built together.
If you miss the event, you'll still be able to watch the talks because I will upload them to Youtube a few days later.
You can read the full description of the meetup here.
I have one question for all of you: do you know any IPFS enthusiasts who live in Montreal? 😃
