If I forget to save before downloading a notebook, I get a stale version of the notebook. I understand (and disagree with) the rationale for not having autosave, but surely if someone clicks the download menu item they want what's in front of them on the screen rather than a stale nb?

Agreed, we should force a save on download, since the current behavior is, to say the least, surprising and counterintuitive.
