+1 It's 2016 we really need this feature :) |
Just an FYI. We've created an indexing solution for GitHub that solves this problem and will start private trials in a week or two. You can learn more about the front-end at: We are currently working on a list of cloud providers that will let you beta test our indexing engine in the cloud for free. If you are interested in beta testing our indexing technology and feel comfortable managing your own Linux server, then fire off an email to privatebeta@gitsense.com and we'll contact you once we are able to start the trial. GitHub added a new commit search feature on 2017-01-03 https://github.com/blog/2299-search-commit-messages |
Excellent! Bravo Github!
|
And it also works with commit identifiers:

What about commit search by short identifiers #852? |
@monperrus That would be a nice addition indeed, but I can't make any guarantees on when it will happen. Thanks for the suggestion! |
This is an FYI, for those looking for more advanced commits search functionality, like searching by short sha. My Chrome extension (https://github.com/gitsense/insight) for GitHub supports searching by short sha, along with other code and commits search enhancements for GitHub. You can learn more about the search enhancements at https://gitsense.com The search engine (it's free) that goes with the Chrome extension, will be coming out of beta this week and will work well enough on a $5 dollar DigitalOcean/Vultr instance, but the more RAM the better. If you don't want to install it in the cloud, you can easily install it on your laptop in a virtual machine if you want. Below is example of a short sha search in GitHub and note how this is in a forked repository, which is another thing GitHub does not support. Searching in forked repos that is. |
I'd like to find all commits whose message contain "npe", or "MATH-280". It would be great to do this on the Github search interface.
