This error occurs as you have added the post-build step Publish build status to GitLab commit (GitLab 8.1+ required) but haven't configured a GitLab connection. Either there is no GitLab connection configured at all or just the job property GitLabConnectionProperty isn't set properly.
Nevertheless I added a null check and log an error for such a case.

I dont get, it cause new version of the plugin do not have that option: Publish build status to GitLab commit (GitLab 8.1+ required).
Should I delete all xml config before upgrading?

Ok I go it, there is a new option in the post build tasks - didnt see it. But we did not activate it.
gonna retry it
