This plugin originally written by Peter Gallagher (http://petergallagher.com.au/) and can be found
on the dataTables sorting plugins page (http://datatables.net/plug-ins/sorting). It had no comments and
was using the eval statement.  I fixed both and then ran it through JSLint.
