This plugin is fantastic, especially when combined with the vertical-tabs plugin.

However, after installing it, it doesn't sort my existing tabs, it only sorts new tabs.

That's fine, but it would be nice to have a tab-smart-sort:sort command which can be manually run to sort the tabs at any time.

This is also useful if you manually re-order the tabs and wish to get them back into sorted order.

That is a good idea. Unfortunately I don't have the time now to work on
packages. Maybe you should take a stab at it?
