The original line buf = b''.join(map(chr, buf)) raises the following error in 3.8.6:
TypeError: sequence item 0: expected a bytes-like object, str found

The original line `buf = b''.join(map(chr, buf))` raises the following error in 3.8.6:
    `TypeError: sequence item 0: expected a bytes-like object, str found`
