Per the iostat man page: %idle Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle and the system did not have an outstanding disk I/O request. %iowait Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle during which the system had an outstanding disk I/O request. %steal Show the percentage of time spent in involuntary wait by the virtual CPU or CPUs while the hypervisor was servicing another virtual processor. @julianwiedmann @paulfantom this isn't right. the avg function will average over all three idle, iowait and steal modes, which will lower the right hand side value in (1 - v), thereby reporting higher utilization than the actual.
(1 - (avg(rate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode=~"idle") + avg(rate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode=~"iowait") + avg(rate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode=~"steal"))) might be right ?

Great catch! Your proposal sounds good to me, but maybe let's simplify this to 1 - sum(avg by (mode) (rate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode=~"idle|iowait|steal"}[5m])))? Could you create a PR?

Per the iostat man page: %idle Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle and the system did not have an outstanding disk I/O request. %iowait Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle during which the system had an outstanding disk I/O request. Note that what these alerts actually warn about is insufficient _remaining_ CPU capacity. So in contrast to some of the other related changes, we should not exclude the 'steal' time here. On the contrary, for a system that experiences substantial CPU stealing we currently _overestimate_ the remaining capacity (as some of it will most likely be stolen as well). In #13215 we allowed an existing object to be reused when converting an integer histogram to a float histogram. This commit follows the same idea and allows injecting an existing object in the AtHistogram and AtFloatHistogram methods. When the injected value is nil, iterators allocate new histograms, otherwise they populate and return the injected object. The commit also adds a CopyTo method to Histogram and FloatHistogram which is used in the BufferedIterator to overwrite items in the ring instead of making new copies. Also see prometheus-operator/kube-prometheus#796 and kubernetes-monitoring/kubernetes-mixin#667. Per the iostat man page: %idle Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle and the system did not have an outstanding disk I/O request. %iowait Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle during which the system had an outstanding disk I/O request. %steal Show the percentage of time spent in involuntary wait by the virtual CPU or CPUs while the hypervisor was servicing another virtual processor. In #13215 we allowed an existing object to be reused when converting an integer histogram to a float histogram. This commit follows the same idea and allows injecting an existing object in the AtHistogram and AtFloatHistogram methods. When the injected value is nil, iterators allocate new histograms, otherwise they populate and return the injected object. The commit also adds a CopyTo method to Histogram and FloatHistogram which is used in the BufferedIterator to overwrite items in the ring instead of making new copies. 'iowait' and 'steal' indicate specific idle/wait states, which shouldn't be counted into CPU Utilisation. Also see prometheus-operator/kube-prometheus#796 and kubernetes-monitoring/kubernetes-mixin#667. Per the iostat man page: %idle Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle and the system did not have an outstanding disk I/O request. %iowait Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle during which the system had an outstanding disk I/O request. %steal Show the percentage of time spent in involuntary wait by the virtual CPU or CPUs while the hypervisor was servicing another virtual processor.
