Documentation is lacking for UDP set up #6573
Comments
From the link This is not true. The restriction is from Kubernetes itself, not ingress-nginx. Please check kubernetes/kubernetes#94028 |
@aledbf Ah, I didn't realize it was kubernetes that was the issue. Wouldn't it be beneficial to add this info though for those who are using a k8s version < v1.20? |
According to the 1.20 enhancements tracking docs the mixed protocols feature in services should have made it into k8s 1.20. Does this mean that mixed protocols in ingress-nginx should work with k8s 1.20, or do you need to make changes in NGINX Ingress Controller @aledbf ? |
@larserikgk I think you only need to update the ingress-nginx service |

As stated in the issue kubernetes#6573 (kubernetes#6573), the documentation is lacking and isn't helpful enough. It was enhanced using a guide done in a Stack Overflow answer (https://stackoverflow.com/questions/61430311/exposing-multiple-tcp-udp-services-using-a-single-loadbalancer-on-k8s/65118104#65118104). The documentation for how to expose TCP and UDP services here isn't that great. It shows how to create the configmap for UDP and yet it never uses it. We have a cluster that needs to expose both TCP and UDP services but the documentation wasn't enough for us to actually be useful.
Using the accepted answer here along with my own intuition, I was able to figure out how to do this. I would like for the documentation to be updated so that it lets readers know in order to offer both UDP and TCP services in the same cluster, they would need:
Having 2 ingress deployments and 2 ingress services allowed me to support both kinds of traffic within our cluster.
