only whitespace changes as per Emacs' whitespace-cleanup command.
this is needed for NixOS and Guix compatibility, and also makes the bash dependency explicit.
symptom: the Guix build daemon invokes makefiles with parallel execution, which leads to missing file errors.

the majority of the diff is only whitespace cleanup. i've recorded it as a separate commit.
