Ok. This turns out to be a menu issue, not an upgrade issue.

The menu_attribute table has the wrong values for the 3 check templates. node_id 183 should have a template_name of "check" instead of "check_multiple". node_id 30 and 31 both set a parameter of "name" where they should set "template_name".
