The Bitbucket API doesn't currently tell you what the default branch is for a repository, this makes finding readmes, dependencies and contributors much more difficult.
Bitbucket say it's on their radar but a few months out, for now we can potentially scrape the branches html and look for the "main branch" label, for example: https://bitbucket.org/ged/ruby-pg/branches/
