Uploading a map

Choose the digital map you want to annotate, and upload it to your account. There are three ways to upload images:

Drop down menu of the uploading options in Recogito1. From file. If you have the map as an image file, you can upload it directly to your account by dragging it into your workspace or using the browsing feature clicking on the “New” blue button on the top left corner, and then the option “file upload”.

The accepted image formats are .jpg, .png, .tiff. Each account has a default storage space of 200MB.

IIIF logo for a document in the Digital Bodleian Library2. IIIF. From the “New” button, select the option “from IIIF manifest”, then copy the manifest of your map of choice in the prompted pop-up. The IIIF manifest is usually quite visible in digital collections, often accompanied by the logo of the IIIF standard.

For the maps made available by the National Library of Scotland, for example, the manifest can be found clicking on the tab at the bottom of the image labelled “Show IIIF”.

WMTS import in Recogito3. WMTS. From the “New” button, select the option “WMTS Map Service”, and paste in the popup the corresponding XML file.

These files are not always very easy to find, you may want to get in touch with the curators of the digital collection you want to annotate to find out more.

You can also access and annotate documents if another user has shared them with you, inviting you through your username or simply sharing a link anyone can click on. You can work on these documents collaboratively, or fork them creating your own local copy.

More info

  • Images uploaded via IIIF or WMTS won’t use any of your assigned storage space, so you could annotate literally countless of them!

  • When multiple image files are uploaded at the same time, they become a bundle. They can be annotated individually, but the annotations are visualised as a whole in the map view, enabling interesting comparisons.
