Pitch

One of the main things Facebook is still fantastic for is organizing to host an event (especially invite-only ones). Meetup is widely used for open-invite events as it's more publicly searchable.

Both private gatherings and open-invite meetups could be better served by an open social network. This is one of last features tying users to facebook in my circles.

The changes that would be required, IMO:

For public events

  • Being able to embed a start/end time + location in a Toot
  • Having an 'attending' (delete if you change to non-attending), which might get special treatment in the frontend (eg a list of who is currently coming).

For private events

  • Being able to send a toot to a whitelist of people (or can you already do this)

Also, Meetup have just changed pricing in a big way, so I'd expect many, many meetups to be looking for a new host in the next month or two.

At least three projects are working on this.

They all have plans for, or evolve fully around- activity-pub.

@DanielHeath could you look at these and see if that "solves" this issue? Otherwise maybe add some thoughts on why it should be integrated in Mastodon and not be a separate application on the fediverse?

Those are good options if you are organizing a public event.

However for private events they are completely unsuitable as they do not have access to the friend list from your mastodon account so they can't restrict access.

v1.0 of Mobilizon is now published.

they use the following kind of event object.

you can participate in an event either with a Mobilzion account or an e-mail address. unfortunately when I try to participate with my mastodon account it opens the event object as a toot in mastodon (so far so good) but I can only favourite or boost it. At the moment Mastodon doesn't support the Join or Leave activities of Mobilizon.

When I see an event from mobilizon on mastodon there is the event title and the link to event on mobilizon. It would be nice if there would be date and location of event as well in the toot text, so you would have a bit more info before you open mobilizon link.
