Compare
http://matplotlib.org/api/toolkits/axes_grid.html
http://matplotlib.org/api/_as_gen/mpl_toolkits.axes_grid1.html#module-mpl_toolkits.axes_grid1

with 2.0.2 docs:
http://matplotlib.org/2.0.2/mpl_toolkits/axes_grid/api/index.html#the-matplotlib-axes-grid1-toolkit-api

axes_grid1 docs should probably be moved out of axes_grid anyways, as the latter is (IIRC) being deprecated.

@dstansby or @choldgraf fixed a similar issue with Axis I think...

I spent some time a few years ago trying to disentangle the axisgrid1/axesartist/axisgrid docs but I don't think I got all the way. I agree with @anntzer that the docs should be for axisgrid1 and axesartist and axisgrid is and should be deprecated

This is still an issue in the dev docs...

I updated the documentation of mpl_toolkits.axes_grid1.inset_locator in #11060. This issue here prevents it from being built, linked and eventually being readable by people. Any idea where to start looking for the cause of this?

I think maybe in doc/api/toolkits/ or doc/mpl_toolkits (not really sure why the latter one exists and is not in the former.)

I started an attempt in #11079. This is not yet working as desired, so comments and suggestions are welcome.

This is fixed in #11079. But that did not get backported to 2.2-doc, which is why it still does not appear on matplotlib.org. It it however available in the devdocs.
