PR summary

This should clarify the misunderstanding at #28084 (where this block of docs is explicitly quoted).

Also, as a side point, this would be a decent use of a "qtpdf" ("qtpgfpdf"?) backend as suggested in #27913 (comment), where we export as pdf and rely on qt's QPdfView to render the figure. I guess in the meantime we could even just use pgf's png export (pdf->png via pdftocairo or ghostscript) and use that to create an interactive backend...
