Is there any extension in assisting with population creation? What if the configuration is very large?

No, not really.  The problem is that both the type and the structure of the input data varies too much from country to country.

For people who know to code in Java, we recommend to program the demand generation in Java.  Two examples are under RunDemandGenerationFromShapefileExample and RunCreatePopulationAndDemand.  See http://matsim.org/javadoc → main distribution .  There should also be explanations under http://matsim.org/docs/tutorials → General Tutorials.  We do not, however, teach it at the same level of depth every year.

For people who know some other programming language better, it may make sense to program it in those languages.  DTD-Validation is still possible.

Projects with sufficient funding levels could ask http://senozon.com for help.

We tried to document what we've done regarding population generation for MATSim here. That is the easy part, though. Adding travel demand is trickier and is (still) an ongoing process, and we (in South Africa) base that on available travel diaries.
