At time of writing MAVLink doesn't have standardized file format (working on it here). Until then the current information is deceptive and plain wrong.
What this does is move the info out of the mission docs into its own file format doc, and just keeps the plain text format - as a "defacto" standard. This should be easy to extend in future.
