vscode has updated to node 10 on build machines (microsoft/vscode#68098), and dependencies have been updated as well.

Sorry, it looks like node 9 works as well. But I'm wondering if the docs shouldn't just recommend 10 regardless. |

Nevermind, node 8 still works. As mentioned in microsoft/vscode#68826 (comment), it was an eslint requirement of 8.10 and above, and locally I was running 8.9. Sorry about the false alarm! |
