@lord-ne try running glxgears with vertical sync disabled:

vblank_mode=0 glxgears

I didn't have to disable it on an NVIDIA card, but depending on the driver vblank_mode=0 helps:

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately running vblank_mode=0 glxgears produced the same behavior, the window is still black. The only difference is a message was displayed ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.

Based on #334 (comment) I was able to get it to work by setting GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe. But my understanding is that this disables GPU support entirely, so it doesn't address the underlying issue.

It seems latest Intel DHC driver solves the issue :

This issue should be fixed in the latest Intel GPU driver, version 30.0.101.1404, which can be installed from https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19344/intel-graphics-windows-dch-drivers.html. Thanks!

I just wanted to mention a hazard with the Intel drivers: I had this same issue (UHD 620), and sure enough manually downloading and installing the latest Intel GPU drivers (31.0.101.2111 as of writing) fixed the issue.

However, when I then ran Windows update later on, the update service started to download the 31.0.101.1122 version of the driver!

I paused it before it finished downloading, and my current workaround is to globally disable Windows update from updating drivers by setting the following option to "Disabled" in gpedit.msc:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage Updates offered from Windows Update

@hideyukn88 I have exactly the same problem, that is:

  • I'm using WSL2 + WSLg on a 1-year old Dell laptop
  • Base X graphics seem to work fine: e.g. xeyes, xclock, emacs
  • When I run glxgears -info as my classic GL test, I get the usual diagnostic output in the terminal (with an amazing ~200 FPS at the default windows size, and ~80 FPS full-screen), but the glxgears window only displays a black background (that is, no colored cogwheels). When I look at the GPU 0 information window in the task manager, there is a small spike in the "3D" info window when I start glxgears (default small size) and the 3D activity climbs to 17% with a full-screen glxgears window
  • Note: the original issue mentions that glxheads works. I have never used it before and don't know what to expect. The man page says open a window displaying a spinning green triangle, but I only get a window with a black background (same as glxgears)

As for the version information:

  • Processor = 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 @ 3.00GHz with Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics (driver = 31.0.101.3616, i.e. more recent that the 30.0.101.1404 version you mentioned above)
  • Up-to-date Windows 10: 22H2 build 19045.2311
  • Up-to-date WSL 2: I switched to the store version as soon as it was available

I did some more tests after the previous post:

  • disabled X410, my X server, even if I was not using it because I was using WSLg => no improvement
  • did my glxgears directly on the laptop, rather than on an external screen => no improvement
  • Win 10 and Dell Command Update were not suggesting a new driver update, but Intel® Driver & Support Assistant told me that there was a more recent driver (31.0.101.3959) available, that I could install instead of the driver recommended by Dell. I installed this new driver, and I got what was expected in the glxgears and glxhead windows! The GPU 3D load (in the task manager) also displayed a steady ~50% load while glxgears was running

Note that I checked again the information displayed by glxinfo and glxgears -info, and they were the same as before, so this information can't really be used to debug this particular problem...

At least glxgears is running as expected now, possibly till a driver update messes up things again

I have the latest Intel driver installed(from intel.com), the glxgears or glmark2 window doesn't appear and
both quit with Segmentation fault.

The old driver from Dell at least had shown a blank window.
THe flags the GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe, vblank_mode=0 are also not heling

Anyway, the laptop attached to an eGPU with RTX 3090 driver work without problems.
(glmark, glxgears )
Any hint welcome, thanks :-)

On some laptops, e.g. Lenovo T15g, when an external monitor is connected the NVIDIA adapter is activated.
You have to assign nvidia to the environment variable MESA_D3D12_DEFAULT_ADAPTER_NAME to force OpenGL to use the nvidia graphics card. See GPU selection in WSLg.

export MESA_D3D12_DEFAULT_ADAPTER_NAME=nvidia
glxgears
