Slick Template

This repository provides a template for Slick-based project with improvements made by MigaMake Pte Ltd in order to make static website generation more convenient.

GitLab CI

This project's static Pages are built by GitLab CI, following the steps defined in .gitlab-ci.yml:

image: "haskell:latest"

before_script:
  - apt-get update && apt-get install -y make openssh-client xz-utils tidy linkchecker
  - ssh-keygen -t rsa -C "ci@migamake.com" -f ~/.ssh/id_rsa
  - ssh-keyscan -t rsa github.com >> ~/.ssh/known_hosts
  - ssh-keyscan -t rsa gitlab.com >> ~/.ssh/known_hosts
  - git config --global url."https://github.com/".insteadOf "git@github.com:"
  - git config --global url."https://gitlab.com/".insteadOf "git@gitlab.com:"
  - export STACK_ROOT=`pwd`/.stack
  - stack new sitecom simple-slick.hsfiles
  - cd sitecom/
  - stack setup
  - stack build

pages:
  cache:
    paths:
      - _cache
      - .stack
  script:
    - stack exec -- site
    - mv public ../public
  artifacts:
    paths:
      - public
  only:
    - master

The initial build may take some time (around 20 minutes), the following builds will be significantly faster.

How to Use

  1. Install stack
  2. Generate template with all relevant functionality by using the following command
$ stack new <name of the project> https://gitlab.com/migamake/slick-template/raw/master/simple-slick.hsfiles

The template provides only Haskell source code, as a part of Slick-based generation you need to create template files yourself based on your design of the site.

If you don't have a global config for stack defined in ~/.stack/config.yaml, you can create it before pulling template with structure like

templates:
  params:
    author-email: email@site.com
    author-name: Name Surname
    category: Web
    copyright: 'Copyright: (c) 2019 Name Surname'
    github-username: sigrlami

if you prefer not to create you'll need to provide parameters for the repo by hand, like this

$ stack new <name of the project> https://gitlab.com/migamake/slick-template/raw/master/simple-slick.hsfiles -p "author-email:value" -p "author-name:value" -p "category:value" -p "copyright:value" -p "github-username:value"

which is not very convinient but generates file correctly. Without them you'll have correct template but will need to update values in package.yaml manually.

Configure

Configuring the template for your needs done in 2 ways, by modification of Haskell source code and by adding specific site files like html-templates, css, js required for the project.

Generator

Slick package reuses Shake build system. In order to create your own rules, add your special rules to the function buildRules in app/Main.hs and conversion logic at app/Builder.hs

HTML/CSS/JS/

Typically files live in site directory where everything outside templates folder will be considered either content or static file. Everything with .md extension will be converted to .html if not specified differently. Here is an example structure mapped to the current generator configuration. You can download example content directory from source repository and put along with your template.

3rd party tools

For proper work of this template, you'll need several 3rd-party tools installed locally tidy and linkchecker. They can be easily installed with your favorite package manager. For example, on Ubuntu

$ sudo apt-get install tidy linkchecker

This template relies on those tools to ensure the correctness of the website.

Running

To run site generation you need to execute following commands

$ stack build

which will build Haskell executable, then

$ stack exec -- site

which will generate output in public folder. Additionally, you can use --preview ` option like this

$ stack exec -- site --preview
  • site name of executable, replace to yours
  • (--preview) - Preview mode will spin out small server and host site locally on port 3030.

Or define your options in Flags strucure in Main.hs module.
